Interview with Slant Six

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman September 13, 2021 9:23 pm Tagged With: blues rock, Canada, hard rock, Rock, rock n roll, southern rock

Slant Six

Slant Six was created in late 2015, and was influenced by the roots of the ‘blues’, and the love of rock and roll. The writing of their songs reflects this love for different styles of music, old and new, which makes the Slant Six style unique and innovative. Slant Six is always a pleasure to hear and watch and will leave you wanting more.

With maintaining a #1 standing on the Edmonton Rock Charts on Reverb Nation, Slant Six proudly boasts airplay internationally, and has achieved a top 10 status on Valley FM 89.5 in Australia, Kaos FM 88.2 NZ, Nu Rock radio, Revolution X,  and local airplay on Edmonton 102.3 Now radio.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Slant Six about their music, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

Slant Six is a rock band formed in 2015 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The music is influenced by all the member’s styles and personal influences which makes for a mix of Bluesy rock style music. Sometimes it gets heavy, sometimes pretty bluesy.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

Again the music comes from all our influences, when we jam together and something starts to sound good, we shape a song out of it and there you have it. Our motivation comes from years of rejection from the industry’s big wigs. We love the pain. lol. One just has to love music to do this.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

The song Falling Off, came from the singer’s daughter. She use to have a rock band and they had this 6minute anthem like song which they never recorded but it was a great song. We got permission to take the song, dissect it, shorten it, change some of the lyrics and make it our own. She was pretty happy to see the song come back to life. This was the first time a song didn’t come entirely from us but we all loved it.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Challenges are sticking out from the crowded spotifies and itunes and the like. There is a lot of music out there and a lot of it is pretty good. It’s not easy bringing attention to yourself. Im not sure technology has helped very much aside from the fact that it is easier to release music but it’s a catch 22.

What was the last song you listened to?

Ace of Spades by Motorhead. We will bring it back to our set for the next show. Audiences like to have a couple familiar songs when they come to the show. We find it helps get their attention on our music and get their approval.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

There is nothing like the sound of vinyl

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Apple music and deezer still encourages music lovers to download the music instead of steaming. It’s a bit more worthwhile for the musicians.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
