Interview with Sonya Glass – Lonely Girl

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 20, 2024 1:17 pm Tagged With: indie pop, Mississippi, Pop, singer, songwriter, United States

Sonya Glass-Lonely Girl

Blossoming pop artist Sonya Glass has unveiled her latest single, “Lonely Girl.” This poignant song features haunting minor chords and Glass’s unique and captivating voice, offering listeners a deeply emotional exploration of the challenges and heartaches that accompany the journey of growing up.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Sonya about the new release, AI in music, dream collabs, and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

This AI thing is getting way out of control. I have students using ChatGPT to write death metal songs about country music…and country songs about being sad. You can feed some Ais a text prompt and create a Hollywood-quality short film. How do you feel  about this new wave of technological innovation?

I think this issue is definitely one to watch. While I do believe areas of AI can be helpful and potentially improve our daily  lives, I also believe people need to be weary of having software do their work for them. The truth is, writing a song takes  work. Creating in general takes work. It isn’t supposed to be easy or done with a click of a button. In my experience, it is in  that work where I find my meaning and my healing. It may not be easy but it is mine. It is something I created. I think we  begin walking a very dangerous path when we are taking credit for something that isn’t actually ours.

I know it’s hard…but what’s your favorite song and/or favorite artist of all time? If not favorite, in your top 3? I absolutely can’t pick one haha. My top three artists of all time would have to be:

1) Amy Winehouse

2) The Doors

3) Ella Fitzgerald

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific or different with this project? What’s the back story?

I think this track, Lonely Girl, is really my coming to terms with growing up. As I have gotten older, I have realized I know  absolutely nothing. Life is constantly shifting and changing. I am constantly being faced with new responsibilities and new  realities. Nothing in my life has gone according to my plan, or the way I thought it would go. It is a daily challenge for me to  let go and allow life to unfold as it is going to. I have come to find that knowing can be just as scary as not knowing. So I  guess this track was really a summation of a lot of the turmoil I experience inside of my own head.

What drives you to create? What keeps you going, especially on the bad days?

I create for me. Truly, that is what drives me and keeps me going on the bad days. Creating isn’t something I necessarily  something I choose to do but instead it is something I have to do in order to feel like myself. I went through a period where  I tried to turn my attention to different things. Ultimately, I felt completely lost during that time. I lost my sense of self and  my truth. I guess It is my way of staying true to who I am.

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why?

Ah! This question feels so impossible. But if I could collaborate with anyone, I would say Eva Cassidy. Her voice was so  incredibly powerful. It would have been an absolute honor to perform with her.

Where is the best place to stay connected with you?

I would say IG currently! Truth be told, social media has never been my strong suit as a self-proclaimed introverted  extrovert. However, IG is the one where I am the most active.

I appreciate Your time. Want to say anything else before we sign off?

Thank you for this opportunity and thank you to all the people tuning into my music. You are my stars!! xx

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
