Interview with Stephen Oran – Crazy

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman July 31, 2018 7:22 pm Tagged With: Funk, Kansas City, New York City, Rock, Soul, United States

Stephen Oran-Crazy

Rock, funk and soul … three nouns that epitomize the definition and the sound of Stephen Oran. Born and raised in Northeast Kansas City, Kansas, Stephen Oran grew up basking in the eclectic flavors of every different type of music genre imaginable. From gospel to jazz, country to classical and from rock to soul, Stephen lived and breathed the sounds and the rhythms that would eventually fuse into his own style and brand of music.

After living in Houston, TX for a few years, Stephen now resides in New York City, where he continues to pursue his musical ambitions.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Stephen about his latest release, challenges, motivations and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I’m from Kansas City, Ks. I’ve lived in Houston, TX and now, in New York City. My music is a hybrid of rock, soul and funk, mostly.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

Growing up, my parents were ALWAYS playing music in the house. Mostly gospel. My father is a minster and my mom sings in churches around Kansas City. I’ve always loved to create and perform and I feel I have something to say, so that’s what keeps me going.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

This release is more about my everyday life. More personal. I just wanted to kinda have some fun with it. If you’re in a relationship (married/dating), you’ll be able to relate to this song. lol

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Developing a following. There’s so much going on in the digital universe, it is a challenge to grab the listeners attention for more than a few seconds. You have to grab them from the first note. But thanks to technology, I’ve definitely reached more people and they don’t have to wait to hear what I have to offer musically.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

My website (www.stephenoran.com) is the best place to discover more of my music. Facebook (StephenOranOfficial) and Instagram (@StephenOranMusic) are also good places to keep up with me.

Anything else before we sign off?

Yes. Please continue to support independent artists! This is how we share our gifts with the world!
