Interview with Stevie B – Old School

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 18, 2022 10:00 am Tagged With: Asia, Central Asia, Hip Hop, India, Iran

Stevie B

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Stevie B about the latest music, adapting during worldwide lock downs, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?

I’m from New Delhi, but I was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. I always find myself in a dilemma anytime I get asked this question. So that’s the answer I decided to go with. I’ve got to represent both cities.

How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?

There were 3 things that I loved most growing up. They were hip hop, pro wrestling and football. It was my dream to pursue either one of these. Out of these music is what was easily available and accessible. The more I listened to hip hop the more it made me want to start rapping and writing my own songs. Writing raps then rapping along to a beat always got me excited, and the more I wrote, my passion for rapping outgrew everything else and here we are.

How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?

My last single was titled “Old School” and as the name suggests, I wanted to take it back to the that 90s – early 2000s era of hip hop that I grew up on. I wanted to showcase a classic and nostalgic flow along with hard hitting lyrics.

Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?

I’m someone who likes to drop singles along with music videos. I have a bunch of songs that I wanted to shoot for but couldn’t because of lockdown and the number of cases shooting up. I had mixed feelings about the situation. A part of me didn’t feel like putting out music because I saw people suffering. Everytime I opened my newsfeed, someone had lost a loved one. Another part of me wanted to put out music so that at least people who know me will have something to look forward to, and it would help distract them from the negativity all around. Once things start getting back to normal, I will start shooting videos for my unreleased songs.

What was the last song you listened to?

2Pac – Starin’ Through My Rearview

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?

I have a soft corner for CDs and MP3s because for the longest time these were our main means of listening to music and I have fond memories of those days. However when it comes to preference, it would be streaming platforms for sure. Younger me would give anything to have a platform where I could get access to all the music from around the world at my fingertips.

Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
