Interview with the lethargics – Rough South Short Stories

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 6, 2022 11:49 am Tagged With: indie rock, Rock, rock n roll, Tennessee, United States

the lethargics-rough south short stories

the lethargics hail from Knoxville bearing guitars and an Indie approach to Rock, Blues, Country, and Americana music.

the lethargics music stakes claim and establishes residence on and in both the abandoned and the undiscovered music landscapes of true Rock & Roll.

Born in the hard beauty of the hills and hollers of Appalachia…

Steeped in the histories and mysteries of Rock, Blues, Punk, Country, Folk, and Americana…

Informed and inspired by the likes of Dylan, Springsteen, Knopfler, Ely, The Clash, The Replacements and The Stones.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with the lethargics about the music, adapting during these crazy times, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?

the lethargics hail from Knoxville and surrounding areas of East Tennessee. We consider ourselves a Rock and Roll band – but admittedly have a lot of trouble finding a genre that fits us by the current definitions. We generally settle on Americana, but it’s really not that simple.

How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?

We are here because we feel we have a story to tell – whether anybody wants to hear it is a separate issue! That, and we really don’t know how to do anything else.

How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?

Rough South Short Stories is the culmination of a trilogy that started with Maladies & Melodies and continued through Hue & Cry. With Rough South, we really tried to tell the tales of what our lives as hillbillies looks and feels like. You know…we may be Waste People, but we’re still People!

Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?

Maybe a bit more rage and sorrow, maybe a bit more isolation – but we’re pretty well used to those things.

What was the last song you listened to?

The Wanderer by Dion. Incredible voice. But we listen to a LOT of different stuff.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?

We have a pretty large collection of vinyl. Each type has good and bad points.

Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?

Right now, we’re on Bandcamp at https://thelethargics1.bandcamp.com and Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/artist/1EyAV7qpT2IKznW8j7cDbL. If we ever make enough money to cover costs, we’ll get a standalone site!

I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?

Not nearly as much as we appreciate you! Thank you SO MUCH!
