Interview with Toy – New Day

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman June 20, 2020 10:00 am Tagged With: Georgia, gospel, R&B, singer, songwriter, Soul, United States

Toy-New Day

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Toy about her latest music, challenges, technology and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I’m originally from New Jersey and now reside in Georgia near Atlanta for sometime now. The music I enjoy creating is whatever makes me feel good when I’m about to write. When I wrote the song “New Day” I was excited about completing something in my life that was dreadful. When I was finally done, I was so excited and wanted to write a song about it so I’d never forget that feeling of moving on from something that made me feel bad.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

Will and gratitude lead me down “this” path of music and it will motivate me to continue on. But while going through this musical journey, I can gain more listeners and fans, which is an added benefit that’s collectively enough motivation to keep me going.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

This is my very first release and I’m appreciating the people who are listening to my song New Day. The goal in releasing New Day was to give people a uplifting, feel good song. And in return if they smile when listening to and singing my song, I feel that’s an accomplishment.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

I’ve found that gaining a nice sizable and dedicated following can be a challenge as a new indie artist. I’ve noticed that you can buy followers but what’s the use if those bought followers are not interested in your music. It really does look more appealing to have a large following because that’s what most people flock to. But I’m willing to put forth the effort to gain real fans of my music. As for technology it has helped me by being able to easily upload, communicate, and work with others in the music industry. You no longer have to meet up together at a physical studio to work and collaborate.

What was the last song you listened to?

Minnie Riperton’s “Loving You”, it’s just one of the prettiest songs I’ve ever heard. I smile every time I hear it.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

I prefer the simplicity of MP3s when it comes to sharing your music, but I have an attachment to Vinyl and using a record player, the whole feel of it.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

I do like all the streaming media’s because I rely on them so much, but I also miss the radio. I miss having to catch a radio show just so you could listen to your favorite song if you couldn’t afford to buy a tape or a record.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

On Twitter and Instagram using the tag @Toy_musically, and you can find most of my streaming media outlets through this song whip link https://songwhip.com/song/toy-3/newday

Anything else before we sign off?

I thank you for this interview, I truly appreciate it.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness.
