Interview with Wendy Escobar

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman February 26, 2018 1:56 pm Tagged With: Electronic, house, New York City, techno, United States

Wendy Escobar

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Wendy Escobar about her flavor of House & Techno, motivations, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music would you classify yourself as?

I’m from New York City, born and raised. My style of music can be classified as House & Techno

What led you down the path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

My ear. Whether its a beautiful chord progression, the depth and warmth of an analog bass, or a smooth piano solo in a pentatonic scale, hearing a sound that I like motivates me, the thought of it gets me out of bed early in the morning.

Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

Yes as an indie musician in a digital age the most prevalent challenges I face are an oversaturated market and technological pressures/trends such as social media, that are volatile and constantly changing. Now more than ever you have premature artists investing in marketing and technology. Whether its a high quality promo video, or a social media campaign to increase their number of followers, a lot of time an independent artists music isn’t ready for that type of marketing push. Unfortunately, technological trends make you feel like these investments are necessary. I strongly believe that lot of this money would have been better spent on a vocal coach, a music theory course, or a studio equipment or software.

Overall technology has made the music creation process a lot easier. I am most grateful that it has allowed me access to a variety of learning tools and made music creation affordable. If you had a question about recording, drums, mastering etc. a few decades ago there were no tutorial videos or chat forums to get you an answer with a few clicks.

Where can we connect with you online and discover more music?

The best way to connect with me online is via twitter @wendyescobarx – I post about new music, upcoming shows, tracks I like etc.
