Interview with Whitney McClain – Cruise

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman December 1, 2017 3:53 pm Tagged With: Oregon, R&B, singer, songwriter, Soul

Whitney McClain-Cruise

In this interview spotlight, we chat with Whitney McClain about her new single, challenges, what keeps her going and more.

Full Q&A along with links and a stream of Cruise can be found below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I’m from Salem, Oregon. I like to make soulful music with emotion and a jazzy flair.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

I feel like I have a calling for music, so I don’t think anything led me down this music path. I had a spiritual revelation and I felt like God told me to pursue a music career. Music has always been a part of me. I have always loved to sing! I don’t think I could ever stop singing, so that’s a huge motivation.

How is your new song “Cruise” different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

“Cruise” is a little bit more vibey than my other songs. I wanted to accomplish getting a song written to the instrumental, honestly, because I had it for a good amount of time and couldn’t come up with anything to it. Also, after getting started writing this song, I wanted to write something uplifting. I feel like I accomplished my goal with this song.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

In the current state of music, it’s not as easy to be seen. There are so many people putting out music every day, and to get recognition from the masses, it’s tough to get through the noise. The same technology, though, has given me a way to be seen, though my YouTube page, website, and socials, by way more people than if I was just passing out CDs on the streets or performing in various locations.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

The best place to find my music online is Spotify and my YouTube page! The best place to connect with me online is Facebook and Instagram. I use those, personally, the most. You can contact me on my website, YouTube, and Twitter, as well.
