Interview with WHOAA – Pink Starburst

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman November 14, 2018 7:00 am Tagged With: dance, electro-pop, indie pop, Pop

WHOAA-Pink Starburst

In this interview spotlight, I chat with WHOAA about their latest release (Pink Starbust) as well as challenges, motivations and more.

Full Q&A along with links and official music video below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

Ring is from Cincinnati, Ohio and Dolla is from Decatur, Georgia. We create music that reflects all that we have been inspired by throughout our life.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

We have both been doing music and also just fans of music our whole life. We would like to say it is just something in us. Everything motivates us to keep going . For the fact we both have accomplished things we would never have imagined makes it hard not to give up. Also our heart is deeply rooted in what we do. We take it all very seriously. We live and breathe music and the creation of it. Just to be able to capture certain moments and emotions and put those in song form is something we value and it really does make us complete to be able to use that as an escape from reality.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

with pink Starburst we wanted to bring people a little deeper into our inspirations. a lot of times i feel artist play it safe until they have a certain following. We are not here to play it safe. We want people to get all of us. We don’t care which order it is. If we want them to feel the funk , they are gonna feel the funk. If we want them to feel the love , they are gonna feel the love. Music has no boundaries so as humans we shouldn’t either!

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Just the platform , with heavy algorithms and what not it is hard for even your fans to see what you post on a daily basis. Also we feel there is a lack of quality over quantity. People want everything at such a fast pace that they dismiss quality in our opinion. So it is like some of the music especially what has become of mainstream there is no depth , no soul, no story. It is just the next one hit wonder or one year wonder 10 times over and repeat .
