Interview with Donica Knight – Love Ain’t A Prize

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman December 23, 2015 12:28 pm Tagged With: Country, electro-pop, Pop, singer, songwriter, southern rock

Donica Knight

Hailing from Millbrook, Alabama, singer/songwriter and performer Donica Knight has released a new EP Can’t Buy A Southern Girl and a music video for her single “Love Ain’t A Prize”.

After hitting #1 on iTunes New Country Songs Charts as well as #1 on Yallwire.com for her video, it’s clear Donica is just getting started. She took a few minutes out of her busy schedule for this brief interview.

You can find more information and music from Donica on her website.

How long have you been at this? I’d imagine writing with Ronnie Milsap, working with Grammy nominated heavy hitters and having songs featured in movies didn’t happen overnight…?

I have been in the music business for 5 years now and pursuing my original music for four.

What are the names of the songs you recorded with Milsap? Are there any links available to listen for curious readers?

Gotta Love A Girl, which was co-written with myself and Pat McLaughlin and Mercy of My Heart. There are no links available currently.

You worked on this new project in L.A. How is this record different from what you have created previously?

This is the first record in which I was a writer on every song. I wanted to make a record that is 100% me so that is how this one is different ☺

What was the last song you listened to? Who are some of your major influences?

All I Ask by Adele. I am a big Bonnie Raitt fan! I am drawn to her voice and the raw emotion she sings about. I am also influenced by Patsy Cline, Etta James, Shania Twain, The Rolling Stones and CCR.

2015 is almost over, how was yours? What’s in store for 2016?

I had an incredible year full of ups and downs, joy, love and memories that I will never forget. I finished my first record in which I was a writer on every song, traveled to a land I have never seen – Hawaii, met several new and amazing people, performed music in several states, wrote one of my favorite new songs and grew as a person…. Next year is going to be amazing! Full of love, opportunity, performances, people and joy! We are Blessed!

Do you tour? Ever play in Nashville?

Yes! This year I performed every weekend from March-August. I have performed in Nashville only a handful of times but it is always a treat!

Where can readers connect with you online? Stream music?

Easiest place is on my website www.donicaknight.com There you will find all my links to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, iTunes, Youtube, Vevo and most importantly my email list!

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

Thank you for sharing your time with me! Mahalo and Happy Holidays !!!!

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
