Interview with Duce Williams – singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman January 3, 2015 1:36 pm Tagged With: Acoustic, Florida, Folk, singer, songwriter, United States

Singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Duce Williams recently submitted to us. I dig his style so much I hit him back about a quick interview and he was cool enough to respond.

Duce Williams

Let’s break the ice. Who are you? Where are you from? What style of music do you create?

My name is Duce Williams, I’m a singer/songwriter from Miami, FL. I simply create music; since I write, sing, play every instrument, and produce each song it frees me to head into any genre. This last album has a heavy influence towards Folk.

Who or what inspires and motivates you to walk this path known as music?

Man… People are the greatest inspiration and distraction for and from music… Life filtered through beliefs and relationships and good experiences and bad decisions all have a sound. I believe you can capture these sound and express them through music; that’s some inspiration and motivation.

What was the last song you listened to?

Actually in the car: Thao and The Get Down Stay Down – Holy Roller

How have your studies in Sydney helped and enhanced your creativity? With roots in the Bahamas and Miami, how have these varying cultural experiences influenced your writing and your sound?

I was thrown into a huge creative community called “Hillsong”, along with hundreds of students from around the world. Being in Sydney really opened up the attention to organic and amplified sounds, which was a harsh crash to the sound of electronic heavy Miami. I take bits and snippets from buskers in Sydney, Miami bass music, Bahamian junkanoo percussion, blend it up and make Duce juice.

How was 2014? What’s your biggest goal going into 2015?

2014 was a year of getting re-settled, I just moved, setup the studio, started a business, and was still trying to release the album. For 2015 I really want to write with more artist and get some placements. I think 2015 should be the year to find some labels and create relationships.

Is the Internet helping you connect with fans and reach new ones?

From the scope of discovery it’s amazing. I find listeners from France and Japan etc. But the island in me loves to be in a room with warm souls (people). I love certain platforms that are a bit more personal, not just an announcement board. Bloggers really create a conversation so I like blogs a lot, all alternative media, and Instagram.
