Interview with Fabrizio Cavalca

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 17, 2017 11:50 am Tagged With: classical, composer, Electronic, Experimental, pianist, Switzerland

Fabrizio-Cavalca.jpg

Born in 1965 in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, Fabrizio Cavalca, is a pianist ( Musical studies  in Lyons ), and designer ( Europeean Institute of design) . In his music, influenced by the French impressionists Debussy and Satie, he is mixing electronic sounds to create a synesestical journey. Designs inspired from the music, all in coherence in creating logotypes, boothes, tableware, furnitures, leathergoods, watches or jewelry .

The creative is a sensitive medium. He feels the nature and reflects it in his creations through his fate. If we define the rules of proportions as an open space, which are the same in design, creative walks there with sincerity. He intuitively find his happiness in this research: too much or not enough … It is on the edge between harmony and dissonance, that the difference is. Then, at this level, a composition, reveals a real  world of intent.

In this interview spotlight, we chat with Fabrizio about his influences, the newest project and more.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I am born in Neuchâtel Switzerland in 1965. At the age of 4, I moved to Lyons in France where I started to learn the classical piano at the Conservatory.

I am very influenced by the french impressionists musicians such as Claude Debussy, Erick Satie. Meantime, at the age of 10, I started to discover the electronic music of Kraftwerk and the fascinating sound of diverse synthesizers.  The talented simplicity of this music really opens the doors of the imagination. You can create your own landscapes and it can takes you to your own journey. This what I am trying to offer by using classical cadenza with electronic sound.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

Nowadays, one the key to create music is that you don’t really need a unaffordable studio to register your creation. You can easy bring your material with you wherever you want to be and start to create everywhere. This is very different than 20 years ago. It means that as soon as you have an idea, you can start to write it on a music sheet and start to create from it thanks to your portable material.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

I like and write different style of music by using different instruments. On this EP, I discovered a kind of re edition of an  instrument made by Roland Corp in the 80’s. The Jupiter 8 was really a dream for me when I was 14 years old. The sound range of this synthesizer offers a wild range of specific possibilities. For example, to can even do kind of vocalize using a VCO ! This is what I tried to demonstrate in this EP.

Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?

Yes, nowadays, everybody has his chance to produce something by himself due to the affordability of the material. This is to me the major challenge. It means that the music isn’t anymore reserved to an elite. Somehow, the doors of the creation are more open. This is a Major key.
