Native Nashvillian pop singer-songwriter Kat Saul delivers an undeniable bop with single “21 Days” – off her debut EP, Vision, out now. Sporting an infectious melody and Saul’s insanely crisp vocals, this track is polished perfection with a side of kitchy attitude. Known for her quirky brand of urban pop melodies and imagery-infused lyrical style, Kat has been named “One to Watch” by the Nashville Songwriter’s Association International (NSAI) and was recognized twice by the Grammy Foundation for her vocal performance and work in audio engineering production. Keep an eye on Kat Saul, she is quietly writing smash hit records right under our noses.

In this interview spotlight, we chat with Kat about her motivations, challenges, the new release and more.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I am a born and bred, native Nashvillian, and I create sonic poems that help people visualize feelings with their ears.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

I am so obsessed with words. Funny enough, I actually got my start writing country-folk leaning songs. I was so in love with how that genre portrayed story lines and used these gorgeous nouns that practically painted the song on the back of my eyelids. But, my favorite tunes to jam out to have always been hip-hop and electronic pop songs I could dance to with my friends. I guess that’s how I eventually fell into my quirky, lyrical style of pop. I wanted to my art to sound like both.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

I released a single, “Iconic” in the Spring. It was a film and tv pitch that I had written, and I wanted to test the waters of what releasing music might be like. The response was overwhelmingly supportive. By November, I was ready to release my EP, “Vision”, with the single “21 Days”. The EP showcases how I saw the world and love in the past two years. It’s not a project I just put out to put out, or art that is contrived for the purpose of putting out a record. It’s a story that shows the changes and cycles we face as human beings. Changes and cycles I felt myself. I made the entire record in my friend Josh’s apartment. No fancy studios, no labels, just kids making art. I feel like that’s so pure.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

Streaming services have been my biggest challenge, being an indie musician. It can be very difficult to connect with playlisters if you don’t have an inside contact. However, the beauty of streaming services is that discovery is just the tap of a screen. “Vision”, so far, has had great streaming numbers from Germany and the Philippines. I think that’s so cool. The idea that someone from a foreign country could happen across my music without me ever having stepped foot on their soil is incredible. That said, the internet can be a very dark, complicated void. But it’s also the light of the future for the indie musician.
