Interview with PISS-OFF!

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman September 1, 2016 8:14 am Tagged With: avant garde, dance, Electronic, New York City, United States

PISS-OFF-Perfect-is-for-Remixes.jpg

PISS-OFF! wants to wet your pants and blow your mind. They combine powers to create noisy, jumping, dancing, screaming, bouncing, rap, punk, electronic, hardcore music. PISS-OFF! is the anti-band. They rock rap shows and turn avante-garde dance performances into dirty raves.

PISS-OFF! is Brooklyn based rapper/singer/producer/artist Anika Trujillo and keyboardist/producer/vocalist/dj Gumball Eyeball. Their debut album Perfect is for Amateurs is now available on Spotify and iTunes

In this interview, we have a virtual sit down with Anika and Daneil from Piss Off to discuss influences, their newest project and more.

Full Q&A, links, and streams below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fImW54uUONs

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

Anika:  I don’t get low energy or chill stuff, I think its cute but I get bored with it quick.  I prefer to make music for the adrenaline junkies soundtrack.

Daniel: I spent way too much time behind a computer and needed to jump around.  PISS-OFF! makes me jump!

How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?

Daniel: At age 6 I started with classical piano but heavy metal ruined that, and then electronic music ruined my heavy metal.  You can find recordings of my bedroom techno from 12 years ago online.

Anika: 15 years total but in a more organized way for about 8 and about 3 to 4 at a professional level.

Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?

Anika: Life, candy, love, stress and the rest is internal drive.

Daniel: I listen to non-stop dance music so my heartbeat is never below 120 bpm.  Every time I hear a new variation in the drums or high hats I need to run to the studio and write more.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

Daniel: We want to grab people and shake them.  See them shocked on the first song, then flipping out on the second.

Anika: The goal was and always is to go nuts, to blow people’s minds with our level of energy.  All thrill no fill.

What was the last song you listened to?

Daniel: Bailamos, karaoke version.

Anika: Munchi- Pero que lo que mujer

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Anika: MP3’s for convenience, Vinyl for the realness

Daniel: MP3s so that I can listen in the park, train station, or public bathroom.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Daniel: For as little as $10 I will send a flying speaker drone to play our music in your vicinity.  This could be perfect for marriage proposals, happy birthdays, or to wake up a heavy sleeper.

Anika: I like our domain best www.pissoff.nyc

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?

Anika:  We just try to hammer home the key points in shiny, brightly colored vulgar language.  It’s been working well so far.

Daniel: There are so many musicians out there but there is only one PISS-OFF!

Do you gig, tour or perform? Do you ever live stream? Where can music lovers see you live?

Anika: We have tons of cool videos on youtube and are also around Brooklyn pretty regularly, we have a tour with all the locations and dates going up on our site soon.

Daniel: We are touring the Northeast this October, you can find us under the disco ball, black light, or table.

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?

Daniel: Check out http://pissoff.nyc for tour dates, videos, music, and a membership application for our secret society.

Anika: However you like to stream we are already there, we got a full LP online on all major platforms and a remix EP coming out soon as well.

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

Never try to open anything with your teeth.

Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness.
