Interview with Rellik – This Town

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman February 23, 2023 7:07 am Tagged With: Canada, Country, singer, songwriter

Rellik and Signal From Earth-This Town

Rellik is an 8x award winning, 25 x nominated hip hop fusion artist from Edmonton, Alberta. With over 600 performances and over a decade of professional experience under his belt, this mid-career artist captivates audiences with his messages which are positive, emotional, humorous and storied with his
personal experiences.

Sharing the stage with contemporaries like Everlast and Run DMC , as well as child hood heroes Buffy St Marie and The Guess Who, Rellik’s musical journey has been a dream come true for someone who has
overcome adversity to flourish in his musical career.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Rellik about the latest music, favorite memories, dream collabs and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

What’s something you’d like readers to know about your latest project?

It’s a ton of fun and upbeat. Its Country with an Urban feel and catchier and more contagious than Covid.

How does this project compare with your other release(s)? Was there anything specific you were trying to accomplish?

I began my career as a Hip Hop artist for many years. Then took a gamble to try something I really wanted to do. It fused into something unique. This single and album are definitely more Country than the last one but still have a hint of those Urban roots.

What motivates you to create music?

The love for music. I cant remember a time when I wasn’t writing music. Since I was 8 , that I can recall but I was always that kid singing along in the mirror.

My children are definitely a great motivation to create music as well.

What’s one of your first or most powerful music memories? Did that play any role in driving you to create ?

For first musical memory . Likely the bouble bass solo in grade 6 to Ben E Kings, Stand by Me. I had to stand on a chair to play the damn thing. It was great. My Mom , Grandma and family came, They were so proud. And that helped ignite that flame in me. For most Powerful, I might want to say sharing a stage with The Guess Who, Buffy St Marie or RUN DMC. Certain shows stick out like that

If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.

My Father. I never got to meet my Dad. But I picked up a lot from him, genetically. Including music.

I would love to just play with him once even.

What was the last song you listened to? And who is one of your favorite all-time bands/artists?

Morgan Wallen. You Proof. I have always generally been more of a Rock and Roll kinda guy but there’s some new Country that’s really great that I have been enjoying. The songs so simple but catchy as heck and I love that.

Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?

My website . www.rellikmusic.ca or ANY of my socials at @rellik118

I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?

Thanks for plugging artists like us!
