Interview with Roses and Revolutions – Back In

by C Bret Campbell August 28, 2016 2:19 pm

We featured music by Roses and Revolutions the other day. Today I’m spinning “Back In.” Let’s get to know Roses and Revolutions a little better…

https://soundcloud.com/rosesandrevolutions/back-in-1

What attracted you to the styles you practice?
We have so many influences. Matt was a Jazz guitar major and Alyssa started off with 90’s pop. Since then we’ve grown to love so many genres. At the heart of our music is always singer/songwriter based.

How long have you been making music? Have you been performing or sharing it with the public all that time?
We started Roses & Revolutions in 2014 which is when our first EP came out

Who or what influences your writing and performance?
TV, movies, and books heavily influence our writing. It’s a great way to take you out of your own experiences and write from a different angle

It seems all creative people go through rough patches or writer’s block of some sort. What motivates you to keep going?
The excitement of going into the studio and recording a song that you’re passionate about. Knowing that you have that to look forward keeps us writing

Were you trying to accomplish something different or specific with this project – creatively or otherwise?
This song [“The Pines”] was different for us because it blends a lot of electronic and organic instruments. That’s something that we’ve just started exploring.

roses and revolutions scWhat was the last song you listened to?
Ingrid Michaelson’s new album that just came out

Do you prefer a certain medium for listening – vinyl, CDs, mp3, reel-to-reel, Pono,(lol sort of)?
CDs. We love driving around and listening to music

If you had to choose one place to host your music, would you prefer Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, or … ?
Spotify

Do you ever feel as if your tunes are lost in a sea of music? What are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract new listeners?
All the time. It’s so over saturated and tough to get bloggers to listen because they receive so may submissions. One of the biggest challenges is some bloggers mistake “weird” for good. Some of the artists that are getting the most attention are not necessarily writing the best songs, or have the best voice. They’re just being weird for the sake of being weird and calling it something new. Sometimes something simple but high quality won’t get traction because it’s too “ordinary” [ed: agreed]

Are you playing on live stages, clubs, bars, the local town picnic, festivals?
Yes! We just finished tour dates with Kaleo. We’ll be playing some headline shows this Fall in NYC, Rochester, & LA

Do you ever stream your performances over the net? Where can music lovers see you perform?
Sometimes. Check our socials

Where is the best place to connect with you online and/or discover more of your music?
Spotify, Instagram, Soundcloud, Facebook

Can you share an anecdote or tale of woe or inspiration like a story about an out-of-touch club manager, your favorite fan interaction, broken busses, or you know… just some experience in your musical journey you’ll never forget?
The first time we headlined in Marshville WI. We had never played WI before, let alone the small town of Marshville. We drove there in July to find a freak freezing rain/snow shower for our outside show. To our surprise, almost 100 people came out with blankets and sat through the horrible weather to see us play and meet us after. It made our summer! [ed: that sounds like a great time!]
Lightning Round
What’s your favorite ice cream?
Cookie Dough
Dream vehicle?
Our Honda Accord
Sailing yacht, catamaran, bass boat, or kayak?
kayak
Place on Earth you must visit some day
Alaska
Batman or Spiderman?
Batman
James Bond or Jason Borne?
James Bond
Bugs Bunny or Anime?
Bugs Bunny
Favorite beer or beverage of pleasure?
Cab
Movie or book quote you are liable to drop at the wrong moment?
“Perhaps I may keep the Handkerchief?”
Left with a choice of one instrument, which would you keep?
Guitar

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
