Interview with the Single Mothers

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman May 9, 2012 12:28 pm

Single Mothers

Introducing the Single Mothers.

You can catch them performing at Music Tree Fest on Saturday June, 2 at Two Purple Pigs. Doors open at 7 PM.

Hometown: Murfreesboro, TN
Primary Genre: Punk, Alt Indie Rock, Scientific
Members/Instruments: Jonathan Nash(Singer/Guitar), Jesse Seek (Drums), Keyth Brown (Bass)

How long have you been playing?

Single Mothers started in 2009.

How did you get together?

It spawned from Jonathan Nash and the bass player Keyth Brown getting into an argument at a bar one night and then climbing up on top of the headlining band’s R.V. and getting kicked out or off the RV. It’s been love ever since.

Jesse the drummer got lured into the band.

What do you do for fun? You know…besides music?

You know the regular stuff. Kissing our girlfriends, Fires, Beer, Skateboarding, Dressing up, comic books, engines, beer, kissing our girlfriends

How’s the music scene in your home town?

Great we love the scene in Murfreesboro.

What’s on your personal playlist this week?

Melvins, Pinback, Howlin’ Wolf, Hank Sr., Fugazi, The Who, The Cows

Can you pin-point the moment you knew you wanted to be a performing musician?

At 6 I (Jonathan Nash) was performing for my friends on my great grandmothers violin. Rocking it out like a guitar listening to Twisted Sister. I knew then what I was gonna do.

What are your goals? How far would you like to go? What is the next big hurdle?

American Idol, Til Death Do Us Part, Oh hell you name it. Mixing, recording, putting up with Keyth.

Describe one of your most memorable music moments.

Making fun of Keyth.

What song makes you dance when you’re cleaning house?

We do not dance.

Tell us about your musical influences.

Minutemen, Fugazi, Mud Honey, the Melvins, Jesus Lizard, the Cows, rhianna (Jesse), madonna (Jesse), Clutch, Black Sabbath, Helmet, Robert Johnson, James Brown, Beastie Boys, Pere Uba, Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu

Where would you like to build a vacation home?

Jonathan: the mountains of Peru
Jesse: Arizona
Keyth: doesn’t take vacations”

How did you hear about Music Tree Fest?

We were jealous of the Goldroom. We copy everything they do.

How do you feel about being a part of the Music Tree Festival?

Super pumped!

Do you have plans for Bonnaroo?

Yes

Is there anything else you want to say?

Don’t even get me started. whew!

point 1: Keyth’s full body beard
point 2: Jesse’s ethnicity crisis
point 3: Jonathan’s constant counting. He’s up to 252,929,073,489,128,390,245,860,231. He’s the world’s tallest dwarf.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
