Interview with Xoch – an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman February 3, 2015 3:39 pm Tagged With: Las Vegas, Nevada, Pop, Rock, singer, songwriter, United States

Xoch (pronounced Zoach) is a singer/songwriter from NY but she is now based in Las Vegas. An ordinary girl thriving in extraordinary circumstances, her music has been licensed over 60 times by major networks for television and film. She is also known for her stage presence and live performances…with or without a band.

When the opportunity arose to interview Xoch, we seized the moment.

XochLet’s break the ice. Who are you? Where are you from? What style of music do you create?

I’m an ordinary girl who thrives in extraordinary circumstances. I am a singer/songwriter, musician and performer. I’m originally from NY and I currently reside in Las Vegas. From the first time I could remember performing, I was hooked. I always wanted to be on stage. It is home to me. I feel so comfortable being under the lights and making a connection with the audience. Being on stage for me is sometimes the only way I feel like I am my true self. I just really enjoy entertaining. I describe my music as “The Line Between Rock & Pop!”

Where did the name Xoch come from? What is the correct pronunciation?

It is pronounced “Zoach” like “football coach with a z”. The name XOCH is derived from Aztec mythology and it means “the goddess of flower and song”. The name XOCH has transformed me on many levels and brought me closer to my authentic self. It is a part of me in the sense that it is both my musical identity but it also transcends into my actuality and encompasses all aspects of my life. I like to think of it a more enhanced me or my alter-ego. My sacred space. A “Super Me” if you will. It is fascinating to me that as human beings, we are able to go beyond mere humanity and accomplish remarkable things. We have so much potential for greatness if we allow ourselves to do so.

I’ve performed Hip Hop in Vegas. What is the Vegas music scene like outside the night club and casino circuits? Where does Xoch fit in?

Las Vegas has this sort of glamorized, exciting image to people who don’t live here . I would say in some ways it is easier being a musician here because it is a smaller market than most major cities. I have been very fortunate enough to play a couple of residencies on Fremont street and also at some of the casinos and larger venues in town but there is something very cool about playing in places where people go specifically for live music. I like to think of myself as an artist who can share a bill with any band or act, play my heart out, give it my all and have a blast doing it!

What inspires your sound and motivates you to continue creating music?

I am just really inspired by writing the best songs I can and continuing to grow as an artist. I find inspiration in everyday life. What keeps me going is believing in myself, working hard and never giving up. It is a journey not a destination. I continue creating music because I the love seeing my work come to life and resonate with people. There is something so amazing and fulfilling about sharing your experiences with others. Creativity is such a tremendous gift and I’m so thankful I get to do it.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
