Interview with ZEKE – Shawn Kemp!

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman November 7, 2018 8:49 am Tagged With: Chicago, electronica, Hip Hop, Illinois, Pop, rap, Soul, trap, United States, urban

ZEKE-Shawn Kemp

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Z.E.K.E. about his latest project, motivations, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and the music video for Shawn Kemp below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I am from Chicago, IL. I just create music. It may fall into different genre’s depending on the feel of the record. Some records may have a splash of soul, hip hop, electronica, pop, trap. Just depends. But the thread is urban, and inspirational. Those elements will be inside of every record.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

I just always loved music. Grew up playing instruments in church, producing for others, and the bug just kind of hit me.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

This release is different from my other releases because it’s my most mature work yet. It is really edgy, and experimental. I am just hoping to accomplish a standard that it’s ok to be different. All different music isn’t good music, so you still have to make sure the songs are, even if you are being different.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

One thing artists such as myself face is how do we build a loyal, consistent audience. The second is how do you monetize your following. Technology helps because you can reach people in different countries with the click of a button. A guy hit me up online and said he loved my music, and he was from Pakistan. I’m from Chicago. That was amazing to hear.

What was the last song you listened to?

Tints by Anderson Paak and Kendrick Lamar.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

CD’s. I’m kind of old school in a few ways.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

I prefer Band Camp. Simply because it helps me discover new artists as well.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?

You can catch me on my website at : https://ctwmusicteam.wixsite.com/zekemusik1
or in IG @zeke_russell80

Anything else before we sign off?

I’m actually a stand up comedian as well. I’m on tour doing stand up comedy. Catch me in your city soon. Go to my IG page for more details or visit me online. Thanks Josh!
