Jazz Vocalist Lizzie Thomas Breathes Soul into Holiday Classics with “This Christmas”

by Leslie Sherman November 8, 2024 7:55 am Tagged With: 2024, christmas, Jazz, neo-soul, new album, New Single, singer, songwriter, United States

Jazz vocalist Lizzie Thomas brings her dynamic talent and unique sound to the holiday classic “This Christmas”, delivering a version that’s equal parts reverent and refreshingly original.

Known for her captivating stage presence and rich vocals, Thomas infuses Donny Hathaway’s soulful holiday classic with her own blend of jazz, neo-soul, and R&B.

Now available on Dot Time Records, “This Christmas” LP released today, invites fans to experience a holiday soundtrack that’s both vibrant and cozy. Perfect for listening to as the evenings draw in, bringing holiday nostalgia with a sophisticated, modern twist.

Listen in here:

From the opening notes, Thomas’s rendition stands out; her smoky, warm vocal tone brings a depth that draws listeners in, and her subtle phrasing reflects the respect she holds for Hathaway’s original even as she interprets it through a jazz-inspired lens.

The addition of a lush B3 organ line by Kevin Sibley adds layers of groove and warmth that grounds the song in a smooth, soulful atmosphere. Saxophonist Wayne Escoffery’s soulful licks bring a lively energy, adding just the right amount of festive swing.

“This Christmas” could be just an ordinary holiday song, it ticks all the boxes, nothing wrong with that. But with Thomas’s voice, dancing, drifting delicately across the top of the song, it becomes something heightened, innovative, more graceful, and more engaging.

Thomas says:

“I believe “This Christmas” is one of the best Christmas songs out there. It’s hip, it speaks to the present moment, and it’s not overly nostalgic – it’s fresh every time you hear it.”

And with her interpretation, Thomas achieves just that – a version that captures the holiday season’s joy and warmth without losing touch with the song’s original heart. Her choice to honor the legacy of Black American Music shines, with a respectful nod to Hathaway’s work while making her own mark on the track.

Supported by a powerhouse ensemble that includes jazz greats such as pianist John Di Martino and acoustic guitarist Leandro Pellegrino, the instrumentation perfectly complements Thomas’s voice, bringing her creative vision to life with a rich, full-bodied sound.

Indeed the album has all the makings of a holiday classic – sophisticated, soulful, and full of heart.

The album’s other tracks include A Charlie Brown Christmas favorite, “Christmas Time is Here,” which takes on a breezy bossa nova twist, highlighted by Leandro Pellegrino’s Brazilian guitar style. In a lively rendition of Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime,” Thomas’s fluid scat and big-band energy infuse the track with festive joy.

The album concludes with a hauntingly tender version of Terry Roche’s “Star of Wonder,” where Di Martino and Smith create an intimate, reflective close. Each song brings a fresh, unique touch, making this collection a delightful holiday listen.

As Thomas embarks on a European tour in March 2025, fans can look forward to hearing this as well as other holiday inspired jazz gems live.

Born in Pittsburgh and raised in the South, Lizzie Thomas developed a love for jazz early in life. After honing her vocal and performance skills, she moved to New York.

A true jazz aficionado, Thomas quickly earned a place in the New York jazz scene, where her bold interpretations and engaging performances has won her fans over. Her critically acclaimed albums include New Sounds From The Jazz Age and Duo Encounters and has performed sold-out shows at iconic venues such as Birdland, the Triad Theater, Chelsea Table & Stage, and Blues Alley, and has shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Ron Carter, the late Russell Malone, Helio Alves, and the Harlem String Quartet.

Her upcoming tour in March 2025 will take her through Switzerland, Germany, France, England, and Ireland, where she will continue to captivate audiences with her vibrant stage presence and soulful vocals.
