In this interview spotlight, we chat with Katy & The Null Sets about their newest release, influences, navigating the digital world as an indie musician and more.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

I’m from Monterey, CA, but I’m currently going to school in Salem, OR. I make indie-electro pop, probably? I also like to do some acoustic singer-songwriter stuff but my recordings usually turn into sugary synth-pop.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

It all started when I was trying to impress a musician boy in high school. He played guitar and wrote songs, so naturally I had to start doing that. Since then, songwriting really became a great way to process any and all emotional experience while also creating something. I think it’s something I’m good at, and I love creating something cool out of negative emotions and experiences that make up a lot of life.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

Blood Brothers is the first project I produced entirely on my own. It’s also the first full length album I’ve done. I definitely was attempting to summarize my personal college experience in the album. I say college experience, but I think I mean what relationships and social interactions have been like in school. The album is called Blood Brothers to signify that blind, naive connection you make with people before really knowing any better.

Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?

Most of my challenges come from being a solo artist. Though a handful of folks have managed to obtain a following solely through online PR, I am not one of those folks. I think regularly playing is a huge part of being an active artist and getting heard, but I’m in the throes of college and band-less. I think there’s a lot of competition online and the chance of becoming even remotely viral is slim. Of course, without digital technology I wouldn’t have made the album. I’m just taking it as it comes. In the end it’s all about making good music and trusting in yourself that it’s valuable.

I’m on Spotify/Apple Music/etc now, but katyandthenullsets.bandcamp.com is the easiest way to go. Haunting You is the single that’s already out; the full album Blood Brothers will be up on April 11, 2017. I also have a couple things on Youtube.
