Let’s have the story behind Columbus, OH duo, Goodblood

What attracted you to the straight forward style of music you practice?
My bandmate Tyler and I are in another band called Fashion Week. It’s a rock band and we kept coming up with songs that weren’t a great fit, so we set out to do something different. We wanted to focus on making simple songs that were still impactful and inspiring.

How long have you been making music? Have you been performing or sharing it with the public all that time?
I’ve been doing music for about 10 years now. I think for Tyler it’s more like 15.

Who or what influences your writing and performance?
Authenticity. We want to write songs that are true and that people can relate to. People who are doing what they love are also very inspiring. It feels like we’re surrounded by artists, photographers, designers and other musicians who are doing great work and pushing us to do our best work.

It seems all creative people go through rough patches or writer’s block of some sort. What motivates you to keep going?
Stubbornness [ed: probably the most truthful answer to that one, ever]

Were you trying to accomplish something different or specific with this project – creatively or otherwise?
Yes. As I mentioned earlier we come from a full-band background. With this project we wanted to challenge ourselves by simplifying our process and being very intentional not to over-complicate the songs. Beautiful music comes in all shapes and sizes.

What was the last song you listened to?
My go-to albums right now are “Junk” by M83 and “Carrie and Lowell” by Sufjan Stevens.

Do you prefer a certain medium for listening – vinyl, CDs, mp3, reel-to-reel, Pono,(lol sort of)?
No

Do you ever feel as if your tunes are lost in a sea of music? What are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract new listeners?
Definitely. I feel like we’ve just had to make peace with the fact that making great music and getting noticed are two separate things. I love making music and I hate trying to get noticed for it. The biggest challenge is trying to strike a good balance between self-promoting and not getting carried away or being obnoxious about it.

Are you playing on live stages, clubs, bars, the local town picnic, festivals?
Right now GOODBLOOD is just playing a handful of shows. We’re doing a good amount of touring with our other projects — Fashion Week and Vesperteen — so we’re just trying to fit everything in.

Can you share an anecdote or tale of woe or inspiration like a story about an out-of-touch club manager, your favorite fan interaction, broken busses, or you know… just some experience in your musical journey you’ll never forget?
The first outdoor festival we ever played is legendary among our friends. Our set was pushed back an hour; we were promised a throne but then they didn’t have one so our drummer had to play on a folding chair; and when we finally thought all the shit was behind us it started pouring and our set got cancelled after just one song. Sad times. [ed: damn, that is a rough day]
