Kristoffer and the Harbour Heads Interview – Right This Wrong

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman November 16, 2016 4:44 pm Tagged With: Alternative, Europe, Rock, Sweden

The Harbour Heads are shear, soiled and beautiful at the same time. A mixture of artist such as Daughter, Curtis Mayfield, Little Dragon and Pink Floyd gives the band a unique expression. Or, as an English music critic once said, ”they are three nice blokes from Sweden, but sound like seven men from Mars”.

Right This Wrong introduces this album and was inspired by Outkast, early Costello and the Zombies. Another key track is ”Nervous in Berlin”. The songs is strong and contagious. The silence and pauses in the song are more efficient than any overdub in the world would have been.

In this interview spotlight, we chat about influences, navigating the digital music world and more.

Q&A along with links and a stream of Right This Wrong below.

What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?

Thats a good question.  My parents always played music at home. and they both where album consumers.

Which led to me ”borrow”/Stealing  albums from them. And soon after, starting to get the beginning of my own collection.

Music got to be a huge part of my teenage identity. and I was natural to start trying out instruments.

And some years after that. Did i get introduced to touring. And touring is a wonderful way to promote/push an album.

I love playing music. live, studio or producing other artists. as long I’m in that environment I’m satisfied and happy.

I guess its called passion?

Who or what influences your creativity? Do you have different influences now, than when you started out in the 80s?

HEY! Im old but not that old :-). I started out in the early 90´s.

I get influenced by people. always been.

Musically I enjoy well written songs, or songs that provoke or got a progressive structure.

All decades got their own theme music. I personally found Ride, Afghan Whigs, Digable Planets, Aphex Twin. That in a combo with my weakness for 60´s pop-Psych music  gave me my first foundation to build on.

I think I have the same influences but my feeler trig on different stuff.

Band/artists like War On Drugs, MIA, Bill Fay, Beyonce, Radiohead they make me interested.

What are you trying to accomplish specifically on EX/EX? Creatively or otherwise?

Ha,ha! I wanted to do an album. Not just a bunch of songs. Without computers and modern editing tools.

For me, an album got a beginning and an end.

We had an idea to create, record put out an album that sound like Joel, Emil and I.

A sound of our band. pure and natural. Print live to tape. even the drum machines and programming.

I honestly felt like I/we accomplished something at some a degree when we was invited to mix the album at Jimmy Johnsons (Swampers) house in Muscle Shoals. He´s a living legend when it comes to analog thinking and to find the right band vibe.

What was the last song you listened to?

Three sides of nazareth by Nicolas Jarr.

Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

In Sweden spotify is very common. probably cause it was invented by Swedes.

I think the other platforms are probably the same or better. I don’t know?

Its a wonderful tool to be able to stream all kinds of music while riding the bus.

And for us as a band all streaming sites works as promo.

People who haven’t heard us. got the chance to check us out on streaming platforms.

if they like it. they will swing by the show. if we play well that evening they might end up buying the album.

cause an album is totally different to what streaming sites provide.

I love them both.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with new fans and reconnect with your old fans?

Thanks to internet both old and young fans get connected to what we are doing.

The biggest challenge is to stay connected and provide the internet world with the wanted material.

I’m pretty new to it still. But its fun and Im getting better all the time.

Anything else you’d like to add before signing off?

Yes. next time I talk to you guys I will share the story when a friend and I went to Joshua Tree and got. 1: flat tire, 2 Engine Breakdown. 3 GPS breakdown. without cellphone signal. To much to handle in the dessert for two Swedes who knowledge about cars.

But that story needs to be told at a Tennessee located bar. Eating fried pickled cumbers and a cold beer.
