Interview with K V A S I R

Electronic solo artist K V A S I R is delighted to bring his immersive dance music to a wider audience with the release of his debut self-titled EP, K V A S I R, out now via KV10 Records.

Consisting of four unique tracks, the EP flows with vibrant, glitchy beats; pulsing arpeggiators; discreet and dream like vocals and a sweeping sense of joy. This is modern take on dance music offering relief from the invasion of big room EDM. K V A S I R is hugely inspired by the way in which music combines with visuals and, in particular, film; recently having been impressed by the 80’s inspired sound reinvigorated by the likes of SURVIVE (Stranger Things, The Guest) and Cliff Martinez (Drive).

In this interview feature, we chat about influences, the new project, navigating the digital music world and much more.

Q&A, links, and streams can be found below.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

I can’t remember not loving electronic music; it just feels like a part of my life now.  I suppose there’s so much control for a solo artist, you can create every part of it and like an auteristic director you can guarantee that your vision will make it into the final mix.

How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?

This is my first release as K V A S I R…….although I’ve been making music for other people for years releasing my own songs is a total buzz.

Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?

Influence comes from so many places.  It’s difficult to list all the things that have had an impact on my music……the visual element of K V A S I R had a big influence on this EP.  I knew how I wanted everything to look before I started anything.

I can’t imagine not having the urge to make new music……I’ve never had to find motivation to keep going yet.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

Working on so much music for other people I definitely wanted to create something that was completely mine; it was amazing to find myself in the position where the only person pushing for more was me.  I’ve had crazy inner dialogues…..some of them were quite dark.

What was the last song you listened to?

Fantasy by Telsa Boy

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Vinyl – but I say that as someone who is as guilty as everyone else for relying on the convenience of mp3s……which have come a long way – I don’t know how they’re encoding mp3s now but they sound a lot better than they used to.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Well I have Spotify and Apple Music – I can’t say that I prefer one over the other.  They’re both way too powerful.  At the moment I’m getting the most from Soundcloud…….it’s really cool to be able to talk to people who are listening to your music and to get involved with other artists.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?

It’s still a business……even though people are seemingly reluctant to pay for music there is still a business infrastructure there that determines who gets on the right playlist or who gets their video on the right forum.  Even independent artists know that releasing your material with no budget for press or promotion is completely futile……and unfortunately that means that there’s some amazing new music out there that gets passed over.  It’s definitely not right.  There’s a danger that being out there as a musician becomes the reserve of those with the means.

Do you gig, tour or perform? Do you ever live stream? Where can music lovers see you live?

Playing live as K V A S I R is a joy and I’m planning to do a lot more……funnily enough I’ve just considered streaming a live show.  Anyone following me on social media will be kept up to date.

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

A huge shout out to everyone who’s listened to my EP.
