Lael Summer has a Burden To Bear

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 3, 2014 10:42 am Tagged With: Funk, jazz, R&B, Soul

Lael SummerBe careful when you click play on Lael Summer’s Burden To Bear… you might be stuck for a while; whether mesmerized by her soothing vocals or entranced by the soulful grooves, you’re going to feel so good you’ll forget the stop button even exists.

Born and raised in NYC, Lael could sing every song from the Sound Of Music by age 2. She performed her first post-vocal training showcase at age 10…the audience cried at her rendition of Beautiful by Christina Aguilera. By age 14 she had opened for Jon Anderson of Yes at B.B. King’s.

On Burden To Bear, Summer’s soulful serenading portrays an intelligence and wisdom far beyond her years. Currently a senior in USC’s elite Popular Music Program, her studies into the realm of music have yet to stop.

Future…watch out!

If that’s not impressive enough, check out this longer list of accolades:

  • Her cover of the Hall & Oates tune “Do What You Want, Be What You Are” was picked as the buzz track to watch out for by the KingsOfAR.com
  • opened for Gary Sinise’s Lt Dan Band in 2011, opened for Jon Anderson of Yes at BB Kings in 2006
  • sang with Tomás Doncker Band in 2012 NYC Summerstage Production of ‘Power of the Trinity’
  • was voted Best Musical Artist of 2013 by Rick London (opensalon.com)
  • her song, ‘I Need A Man’ was featured on NPR Blues Show SmokestackLightnin’

Her band includes Tomás Doncker and James Dellatacoma on guitars, Nick Rolfe on keyboard, Josh David, Kevin Jenkins, and Booker King sharing bass duties, Damon Duewhite and Tobias Raplh providing drums, Daniel Sadownick on percussion, horns by Mark Henry, Steve Bernstein, and Paul Shapiro, and Alan Brubner on violin.

All songs on this record were written by Lael and Tomás Doncker and produced by Tomás Doncker and James Dellatacoma. Lael and this album is supported by True Groove Records.
