Loving Love’s Well, Il Pozzo d’Amor

by C Bret Campbell August 23, 2012 9:20 pm Tagged With: Piano, World

Aaahhhh, piano and cello make a wonderful sound, together. If you put their combined sound through a finely calibrated analyzer, you can see that they fill the frequency spectrum in a unique way that seems to include a little bit of everything around the individual notes played. I swear there is something going on there that should be studied by people far smarter than I. What I do know about it, is that it is darn pleasing.

So I got in the mood for something different, and grabbed this record by Bruno Bavota – “Il Pozzo d’Amor” from Naples. Accompanied by Fabrizia Nicolosi on cello, Bavota has put together a melodic journey of a record.

Now my Italian is limited to a couple pasta dishes and maybe a dirty word, or two, so I’m not really certain what the song titles mean. I do know how the music feels. It feels real, warm, longing; it has emotion guiding it. Il Pozzo d’Amor translates to “Love’s Well.” I could take that in a lot of directions, but if the compositions so beautifully played here are to guide me, I would have to say it’s about a well filled not with water, but pure love.

“My box is full,” the record reviewer guy said, “I don’t have time for any more than breeze-through, to tell the truth. There is so much that has to be done. But no, I need to relax and chill with some different tunes for a minute or two.” Well, that was a few hours ago… I did just what I set out to, then got up in a better frame of mind, did some chores and came back to write.

Thing is, I’m playing it again. Justin from K & W just came in to work on some speakers and said, “Oh, that sounds nice!” So, here we sit, not working, just soaking in a beautiful journey through the heart of a musician in stunned silence.

Bavota has won a slew of awards with titles I can’t pronounce, his music has been used on TV and in films, and it’s no surprise. I can close my eyes listening to this disc and landscapes familiar and foreign, some completely alien, or even other-worldly fill my vision.

His bio makes it seem he’s only been playing a few years. Here’s to many more! I’ll be keeping this one handy – autumn driving through the Middle Tennessee hills is right around the corner, and this is perfect for those afternoon-sun-through-the-golden-leaves moments.

Here is some cool video!
