Melbourne’s Hanna Silver on the Online Music Festival by AITP

by C Bret Campbell September 13, 2013 10:04 pm Tagged With: Melbourne

_MG_1666We’ve had more fun than the meter will register with our AITP interview series. Let’s meet Hanna Silver

Let’s start at the beginning. Tell us a little about yourself. how and when did you start making music?

I started piano when I was age 3. I don’t remember why, but my mother tells me it was because I saw her and my brother playing, so I wanted to do it too.

Why do you do it, now?

When I finished studying classical piano at university 9 years ago, I knew I didn’t want to be a concert pianist. I had jazz piano lessons for 3 years, and fell into the world of vintage analogue synthesizers. That’s where I found my new love. I don’t have much else in my life that isn’t to do with music, other than watching Star Trek: Voyager.

What were some of your early influences and what inspires you today?

I grew up on classical music, then as a teenager listened to 90s pop music like Mariah Carey and Backstreet Boys, and later fell in love with Ben Folds Five and Gomez. In the last 6 years, my tastes have broadened significantly. Now I’ll listen to any great 70s funk, 60s & 70s soul, afrobeat, 80s boogie, a bit of jazz, and instrumental synth music of the 70s and 80s.

What was the last song you listened to (disc in the car or what-not)?

The last song I listened to was the new single ‘Devil Said’ from The Vaudeville Smash, a great Melbourne band that my boyfriend plays with. They just put out a new video for the tune, it’s good fun!

How did you connect with Artists in the Plus and what attracted you to working with them?

I’ve been on G+ for over 2 years, I can’t remember how we got connected! John Voshell’s always done a great job promoting indie artists.

Last year’s festival was a huge success and changed a lot of things about music on the net. Were you a part of that?

Yeah, I was part of it and it was great! I had a good time and even made some new friends out of it.

Have you been using services like Hangouts On Air, U-Stream, Street-Jelly, or others to perform live via video on line? What kind of reaction are you getting?

I do the odd HOA gig, I did one recently for my EP launch. They’re always good fun, and people who are new to the concept find it interesting.

Village Studios in LA will be hosting the festival, this year and there will be a studio stage in North Carolina and another in Norway. Will you be travelling or performing remote from your own studio?

I’ll be performing at home, in my loungeroom, with some help from my creepy doll.

If you could ask one performer to join you on a record, who would it be?

Elliott Randall, coz he’s a freaking legend. Go look him up if you don’t know who he is.

What one thing would you change about this world, if you could?

As a child I read some of the Wizard Of Oz books. I always wished the world could be like the Emerald City; everything free, everyone just getting along. That was before I knew how the world works.

Where can we find you and your music?

My 2 EPs are online for listening and sale at http://hannasilver.bandcamp.com

In closing, is there anything you would like to add or anyone you would like to shout-out to?

Many thanks again to Steve Tuffil, Kamal Tailor and everyone else who supported me in my Pozible crowd funding campaign this year.
