Michael Colton Met Death…Twice But Is Here With The Robert Johnson Sessions

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman December 9, 2012 9:49 am Tagged With: Blues

Robert Johnson Sessions by Michael Colton

Michael Colton has knocked on death’s door twice in his life. Since he’s still alive he thought he would dedicate his life to music, more specifically the blues.

The Robert Johnson Sessions is Michael’s innovative and refreshing tribute to the blues’ legend, Robert Johnson.

“I don’t think of death as this dark struggle; we’re all going to die, but there was something liberating in hitting that boundary. It set me free,” Colton explains. “Robert Johnson’s music helped me heal. There is something joyful in that music that I couldn’t grasp until I was in the ICU hallucinating from the pain. When I healed, I heard his music differently.”

If you are not familiar with the legend of Robert Johnson, it goes a little something like this:

  • In the 1930s, Mr. Johnson was just a mediocre guitar player hanging around juke joints.
  • He disappeared.
  • He came back.
  • His guitar skills were somehow magically proficient.
  • The myth is that Robert sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the guitar skills.

Robert Johnson’s work has been interpreted again and again by other legends such as Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and even the more modern Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Michael Colton’s fresh and innovative take on these 6 Johnson classics is on the level with the rock gods mentioned above. Colton has depth, warmth, grit, and he can play the hell out of his guitar.

If you love the blues, you want to support Michael.
