Until We Get It Right is the first single off of Modern Mimes‘ debut album Wake Up.

Wake Up is a conceptual album that follows the story of an odd girl who unmindfully opens a door to an unknown realm where she retrieves a dark secret that was intended to be lost at birth. She must bravely travel back through the subconscious parallel to face the shadow person that haunts her there, before it destroys her and the innocent lives plagued by the dark secret.

Each song off of Wake Up will be accompanied by a music video in the similar form of a chapter in a book or TV series, each song/video will collectively tell a unified story. The story however, will be told backwards starting with Until We Get It Right (chapter 9).

In this interview spotlight, we speak with Modern Mimes about their motivations, the new project and more.

Full Q&A, links and streams can be found below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

We’re from South Florida and our style of music can be best described as raw and emotional.

It’s somewhat genre-less, really. The reason for that is that each song has it’s own identity. It’s as though your subconscious is speaking to you…which at times is subtle and circular, other times it’s more aggressive and erratically demanding of being heard.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

Adi- Singing was always a very instinctual outlet for me. Many things will try to derail you from the course, including yourself. I’m motivated by my spirituality within.

Ernesto-  I grew up watching my father play guitar in cover bands, and the day came at the age of 10 when I picked up his guitar and started to play around with it. Been playing it ever since. Music just became a huge part of my life and no matter what I do, I can never let it go.

Who or what are your biggest influences when it comes to your creativity?

Adi-my biggest influence is anything that has heart and soul or as I like to call it “the feeling”

Ernesto- My influences vary from late 80’s heavy metal to 90’s Grunge and Hip Hop to Trip Hop and Industrial. I would have to say that Metal and all its sub-genres are what influence my guitar playing the most.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

Adi- I think it’s only natural for us to want to reach as many ears as we can but the difference with this project is I full heartedly believe we will reach those ears, be it days, months, or years…we will be heard.

“Until We Get It Right” is just one layer to our sound off of our upcoming album “Wake Up.” Our goal isn’t to be an overnight sensation, our goal is to continually encourage ourselves and our listeners to look within.

Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?

Adi-I dreamed about the opportunity to go direct to listeners when I was younger and thought “then I can do what I’m suppose to do” but like with anything else there are certainly pros and cons, it depends on how you choose to perceive things and how willing you are to adapt while keeping your integrity.

Everyone seems to be looking at numbers and it’s definitely a challenge to try to be “relevant” and be on top of social media, marketing, oh and let’s not forget the music!

When you look at it from a positive note…We haven’t performed a full live set yet and still have managed to reach over 600 “fans” via internet. That couldn’t have happened back in the day.

How do you feel about streaming services? Any romantic attachments to the physical formats: vinyl, 8-track, cassettes, CDs?

We don’t have anything against streaming services..it’s the natural progression of where we are in this digital age.

Vinyl and Cd’s would have to be our preferred tangibles.

Where can we follow you online and hear more music?

  • Instagram: http://instagram.com/modernmimes
  • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/modernmimesmusic
  • Cd baby, iTunes, Spotify, and most other popular distributors.

Anything else before we sign off?

Adi- It’s whenever you decide.

Ernesto- I encourage our listeners to find a message within our sound, lyrics and full body of work. We have something to say, and our goal is for our fans to look within themselves and take our message as a positive one.

Thanks again, we hope you enjoy our video and look forward to submitting to you in the future.

Adi and Ernesto, Modern Mimes

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
