Monks of Mellonwah through The Sky and Dark Night

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman May 2, 2013 2:22 pm Tagged With: Alternative, Australia, Rock

Sky and the Dark Night If you haven’t heard about Monks of Mellonwah, let me be the first to tell you that in the near future you will not be able to forget them.

Based in Sydney Australia, this alternative rock four piece has been busy. Allow me to explain.

  • Toured Australia and traveled to the U.S. twice
  • Best Indie Rock Band (2012 AIM Awards)
  • Best International Act (2012 LA Music Awards)
  • 2 EP’s and subsequent music videos have gained them worldwide critical acclaim, airplay on MTV’s network and extensive radio play.
  • music video “Swamp Groove” enjoyed airplay on ABC’s music program RAGE
  • “Swamp Groove” also claimed first prize at a music video night at “Harold’s Shorts” short film festival

Below is a quote concerning their album Neurogenesis.

“Neurogenesis” received coverage on MTV, Big Takeover Magazine, CMJ, Kings of A&R, Noise 11 and Tonedeaf. The media attention earned them licensing spots in the US including Discovery Networks and Bunim Murray.  The video for “Neverending Spirit” received high profile exposure in the US including MTV Networks. The College Music Journal (CMJ) featured the track on their MixTape for May along with a feature of the band in their magazine.

The band has signed a development deal with A&R Worldwide and is currently in the studio with Keith Olsen (legendary producer) working on a full length album.

So what about their newest EP The Sky and Dark Night?

This is epic.

You know how you can sync up the Wizard of Oz with Dark Side of the Moon for a completely new moving watching experience?

Monks of Mellonwah have created a very similar experience with The Sky and Dark Night (only the movie plays out in your head as you listen).

The Monks are the love child of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd bred in the land down under and undeniably destined for greatness.

I have listened to this EP many times over the last several days and I will be listening to it again very soon.

Connect with The Monks on Facebook and Twitter. Then go visit their website.

Joe de la Hoyde says [about The Sky and Dark Night] “We are each riddled by our own curses and battle our own demons. There are diseases and syndromes, and many things that we can’t understand let alone hope to control. Sky And The Dark Night, to me, is the journey from the beginning of our battles to their fruitless ends; the ups and downs, the triumphs and the failures. It is the undying hope that maybe somewhere along the way, we might find ourselves.”
