Motown-Tamla Crooner Hits High Note With New Label

by Featured Guest August 1, 2014 11:25 am Tagged With: Los Angeles, United States

Gene Van BurenLos Angeles, California – At 12:01am on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, singer-songwriter Gene Van Buren will embark upon a new musical journey when his brand-new Soul/R&B release entitled “STILL” hits radio airwaves and digital stores around the world. The singer who was formerly signed to the Motown-Tamla label in the late eighties by none other than The Late Miss Anna Gordy-Gaye reemerges with his musical pedigree intact on this new disk of mature adult love songs.“STILL” is an eleven song disk geared towards the over 40 Soul R&B music lover; and according to many music industry statistics including those furnished by the RIAA, this demographic is the most undeserved music lover around the world.

GVR Records is the company that has set out to fill the void for Baby Boomers who have for a decade or more seemingly been left out in the cold by other record labels. And with this new CD, they have given their stamp of approval for Gene Van Buren’s second coming. The company is headed up by President CEO Jimmy Levine who at 19 years old was a staff writer/producer at Jobete Publishing/ Motown in the late seventies and who ironically also played a role in getting Gene Van Buren’s first album, “What’s your Pleasure” off the ground.

Says Mr. Levine, “Gene Van Buren is a singer’s singer.“ “I’ve known him for over 30 years and he’s like a brother to me.“ “When this opportunity to allow Gene to be heard again by the masses came into view, I simply had to sign him to GVR.“ GVR Records is distributed by Razor’s Edge Music Group-INgrooves Digital. INgrooves is the largest distribution channel for digital entertainment in the world. The label is also represented by Active Media Universal Operations UK for physical distribution worldwide. Mr. Ray Arceneaux, Director of Label Operations for INgrooves is credited by Mr. Levine and his business partners Keith Reese and Larry Kimpel for getting the deal done for GVR Records that has made this comeback opportunity possible for Mr. Van Buren.

The first single from “STILL“ is a romantic ballad called “One“ that GVR Execs feel could quickly become Gene Van Buren’s signature song. The disk also features a driving rearrangement of the Marvin Gaye classic “What’s going On“ that was produced and arranged by Larry Kimpel.

Kimpel is a founding partner in the label and acts as it’s President of Artist Relations. In addition to his duties at GVR, Mr. Kimpel is also the bass player and musical director for the platinum selling R&B Band, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly. Keith Reese heads up the Product Creation and Branding Department at GVR and has been a staff producer and audio engineer for the storied “Hour of Power“ religious television program for over a decade. Says Mr. Reese, “Everyone at GVR Records is extremely excited to be working with Gene on his comeback CD STILL.“ “Soul/R&B music Lovers around the world deserve this type of album again, and we’re very proud and happy to be able to bring it to them!“

Very few recording artists get a second chance at stardom the way Gene Van Buren has with “STILL“, but according to the Soul/R&B crooner, “My musical story is not finished yet… I’m still a viable artist with a heart full of music to give to the people and I am extremely grateful for this opportunity!“

This writer would tend to agree that Gene Van Buren is indeed an artist with a rare talent. But of course, music lovers around the world will have to judge that for themselves.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness. In his own words: “The Matrix is real, but there’s a way out.” Support on Spotify or Bandcamp.
