NONA – Honey Money – Release and Interview

by C Bret Campbell August 26, 2016 7:07 pm

“Honey Money,” I wonder if anyone has enough of it. Just out today is a great new track from Michael Goldman of NONA, “Honey Money”

We were diggin’ on this the other day so we asked for an interview…

“A bit of the song is inspired by a night I went out with my roommate who was setting me up with his girlfriends roommate. I was duped into driving to Hollywood, paying $15 for parking and several more series of $15 on drinks at a club where I’m not sure I heard a single spoken work over the music. I’m not a guy who can win someone over with a pelvic thrust nor do I aspire to be one. I left that night with a broken bank and a furthered distaste for that scene.”

Let’s get to know Michael Goldman of NONA and your music a little better.

What attracted you to styles you practice?
Influences [ed: laughing already]

How long have you been making music? Have you been performing or sharing it with the public all that time?
I started writing songs around 12, so 13 years now. I only shared them with my high school girlfriend until I was around 19.

Who or what influences your writing and performance?
Romantic failures, being poor, drugs and bands I like.

It seems all creative people go through rough patches or writer’s block of some sort. What motivates you to keep going?
It’s literally the only way I know how to cope.

NONA 3 (1)Were you trying to accomplish something different or specific with this project – creatively or otherwise?
I strive for it to be genuine and unique by being as honest as I possibly can.

What was the last song you listened to?
The Fringe by Sego

Do you prefer a certain medium for listening – vinyl, CDs, mp3, reel-to-reel, Pono,(lol sort of)?
pono?! good for neil for making it on the list. I have a record player but I typically listen to music in my car or my bed room monitors. My favorite medium for listening is with people that are into similar things as me. [ed: good for you, for recognizing pono! loving these answers :)]

If you had to choose one place to host your music, would you prefer Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, or … ?
This is an insane question. Online outlets only? I wonder if jewelry makers prefer amazon to etsy. I’d prefer to host my music in stores (digital or not) where other people actually buy art but those don’t seem to exist. I listen to music on Spotify and they have been good to me with playlists. [ed: it’s insane that this crazy music world drove Radio, TV and Movies out of my head when I wrote the question and you’re the first to mention it… better step up my game]

Do you ever feel as if your tunes are lost in a sea of music? What are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract new listeners?
Jesus, that’s depressing to have to think about. The biggest challenge is having music that grabs people immediately but continues to have depth. Most of the time it’s one or the other so people either dispose of it quickly or don’t give it a try. That goes for everyone though. Being poor doesn’t help. Being able to fund a campaign would be helpful. [ed: no kidding!]

Are you playing on live stages, clubs, bars, the local town picnic, festivals?
yes.

Do you ever stream your performances over the net? Where can music lovers see you perform?
I have not. They can see me perform at my shows. I might try that out though.

Where is the best place to connect with you online and/or discover more of your music?
Spotify and instagram.

Can you share an anecdote or tale of woe or inspiration like a story about an out-of-touch club manager, your favorite fan interaction, broken busses, or you know… just some experience in your musical journey you’ll never forget?
I will never forget my trailer fishtailing down a canyon in Utah and crashing into a snow bank rather than going off the edge of the cliff. Very informative. [ed: spun out a tool trailer on ice in an intersection – yup, very informative!]

Lightning Round
What’s your favorite ice cream?
high end

Dream vehicle?
late 80’s toyota land cruiser.

Sailing yacht, catamaran, bass boat, or kayak?
yacht, but I’d probably sell it.

Place on Earth you must visit some day
india.

Batman or Spiderman?
oh god [ed: lmao again]

James Bond or Jason Borne?
bond.

Bugs Bunny or Anime?
tommy pickles

Favorite beer or beverage of pleasure?
Wine. Lots of wine.

Movie or book quote you are liable to drop at the wrong moment?
so much death

Left with a choice of one instrument, which would you keep?
thats awful to think about. probably my dads old acoustic

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?
go listen to my music, tell you friends to listen too. Maybe buy a song? You’ll probably dig it.
