Interview with Oloff

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman September 6, 2016 2:00 pm Tagged With: Hip Hop, rap, United Kingdom

Oloff.jpg

Oloff is a rapper/musician from North London, currently residing in Bristol. The momentum has been picking up and Oloff is excited to share more releases with us in the near future.

In this spotlight, we speak with Oloff about music, the new release, and more.

Full Q&A, links, and streams can be found below.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

I’ve always really enjoyed rap, especially more fringe stuff. A lot of my favourite music is hard to categorise and I feel mine is that way too.

What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?

Periods of loneliness and boredom. An urge to create things. Music was always very important to me but I never learnt to play an instrument and to be honest I don’t think I had the discipline to do so at that age – I just got so bored doing it. When I first started writing it was just me dipping my toes in and then pretty quickly I fell in love with it.

Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?

My tastes have gone back and forth a lot. For long periods I’ll listen to almost nothing but rap and then that’ll stop and for months I’ll exclusively be listening to indie rock/alternative type of stuff. During the height of my MDMA use I sort of stopped listening to albums and just got into that kind of throwaway, uplifting, dreamy-sounding electronic music/IDM type stuff that’s all over youtube, and after a while of that I think I got really sick of it and decided to properly get back into music and stop fannying around on the internet. I started downloading albums again and also trying to broaden my horizons so now I listen to pretty much anything from the 50s onwards and I try to hear new things at least ever week or so, from most genres.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

This project was intended to be short and to the point: a good representation of what I’m about but not a totally definitive piece or anything. I think it achieved exactly that, I’m really happy with it but also very eager to get more work out there in a variety of different styles.

What was the last song you listened to?

‘Hey Good Looking’ by Blonde Tongues. It was very good.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

MP3s! Only for financial reasons really though. When I have the money I’m going to amass a vinyl/CD collection.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

At the moment it’s bandcamp. I have a lot of sample based stuff so I can’t use Spotify or Apple Music as far as I’m aware.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?

It’s been pretty good so far actually, there’s a lot of really cool open-minded people out there. I guess getting traffic on facebook has been difficult, all of my activity has been on youtube and it’d be nice to have more of a base of communication so I can publicise my stuff and let people know what’s going on.

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more music?

Facebook!

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness.
