With new single “BOOKIN’,” MASSEY barrels straight through the guardrails of genre and lands squarely in his own lane.
The track is a full throttle blast of 70s tinged hard rock, dripping with grit and drama. Right away, the listener is hit with a wall of sound. Charlie Lerant’s searing guitar lines, horns that flash like sirens, keys that swirl like smoke and drums that hammer home the story.
MASSEY delivers it all with that unmistakable baritone, narrating a tale of passion and catastrophe.
What makes “BOOKIN'” especially compelling is how it highlights MASSEY’s collaborative, almost old school approach to music. He doesn’t play instruments in the traditional sense, instead vocalising entire arrangements – basslines, horn parts, rhythmic accents and working closely with musicians to bring them to life.
Here, his co-writer and former bandmate Charlie Lerant provided the fiery guitar backbone that inspired the story and lyrics, which MASSEY wrote in a burst of inspiration. That cross pollination of instinct and musical craft gives “BOOKIN'” a more lived in feel that distingishes it from the more polished rock singles.
MASSEY himself is something of an enigma. A self style rock and roll shaman who surfaced seemingly out of nowhere, he has already achieved over 1 million combined views on his music video releases.
Drawing on the funk and soul of New Orleans, the grit of retro R&B and the drama of cinematic storytelling, he is carving out a singular lane. With his debut album Reason for Being on the horizon and a string of bold singles already out in the world, “BOOKIN'” is another strong jolt in the rise of an artist who thrives on urgency, unpredictability and the thrill of the chase.
