Richard Tyler Epperson’s Hourglass

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 12, 2014 11:52 am Tagged With: Acoustic, Alternative, indie, Pop, singer, songwriter

Richard Tyler EppersonRichard Tyler Epperson is a multi-instrumentalist from Salt Lake City, Utah. He had the following to say about his new album Hourglass:

“Listening back to the songs, I started to realize a lot of them had lines or hidden messages about how fast time goes by and about trying to find happiness in the short time we have. Those thoughts inspired the song Hourglass and the name seemed to be fitting for me at this point in my life. Time goes by so fast and we all get caught up in daily life stresses that take us away from our dreams and the things we care about. The more I grow up and the older I get, the more potent that thought gets. If you stop to think about it, the hourglass is always running and it’s important to make sure you’re living life the way you want to be living it.”

Learning bass around age 12 and piano around age 15, Richard began writing and recording his own instrumental compositions. Throughout his teens and early 20s, he played in bands as bassist and rhythm guitarist.

Now at 29 years old, Epperson is focused on his own songwriting and creating his own musical style. During 2013, he wrote, produced, and played all of the instruments on his debut album Falling Between the Stars. You might have seen him live at the Utah State Fair, the Live Green Festival or on local broadcasts for KUTV News, radio station KXRK, and Park City TV.

Hourglass is a reminder to all of us that life is short and we need to be focusing on making the  most of the present moment.

Creating the foundation with his acoustic guitar, Richard takes us on a journey through a series of folksy-indie pop hits. His strong voice and use of electronic instrumentation complement and add more depth to the frequencies emanating from Epperson’s creativity.

If John Mayer were to team up with Kurt Vile to take over Death Cab for Cutie, you would end up with the stylings of Richard Tyler Epperson.

Stand out tracks include Like Always, Lights, Hourglass, I Know… ok I really like them all but I’m not giving you the entire tracklist (there’s 14 songs).

Hourglass does not drop until April 8th but you can support Richard by visiting his website then connecting on FB or Twitter.
