Sonic Nights gets “Back In My Head”

For some reason, I’m trying to come down on Sonic Nights’ ep “Mirrors”, but I can’t bring myself to do it. Perhaps it’s just a good record that’s aimed at a different market than I was in the mood for on first listen.

Maybe it’s that the production is just incredibly good for an indie pop-rock band. Perhaps it’s that the guys are pretty young, but writing really good songs with catchy riffs and hooks, that have depth and meaning.

I dunno, could it be the musicianship which doesn’t leave anything lacking? I mean, every member of the group has his s**t together. Great groove, cool no real cool sounds, top notch playing.

Then again, it might be the groovy arrangements. They’re tight, with good dynamics and movement, something many young (and old) artists forget about.

The songs on “Mirrors” reflect the lives of the band members and get quite personal, if you listen closely. But they have a way of seeming like anyone’s personal stuff, the kind of way that makes one really identify with the lyrics. Speaking of lyrics, they are well written with that kind of craft that will have you singing along the first time you hear it.

Great highway music! It feels like a motorcycle ride on “The Dragon’s Back.”

I could see a big room full of people pumping their fists and bouncing in time to these cats. To tell the truth, this would be refreshing to hear on the radio. Oh well, I tried to be hard on ’em…  Two thumbs up for Sonic Nights!
