Soul Searching in the Small Hours on MASSEY’s “3:00AM Funk”

by Leslie Sherman April 25, 2025 12:04 pm Tagged With: 2025, indie rock, New Single, Rock, singer, songwriter, United States

There’s a certain kind of magic that only surfaces in the small hours — when the city exhales, the lights blur and introspection becomes the only party left in town.

MASSEY’s latest single, “3:00AM Funk” bottles that mood with an effortless cool and a surprising depth.

At first listen, it’s all groove: a smooth, late-night funk jam with swagger and swing. The bassline struts, the beat lingers just behind the pocket and Massey’s delivery rides it all with a calm confidence. It feels like cruising empty streets, windows down, chasing something just out of reach.

Listen in here:

But listen closer, and the lyrics reveal a different layer. There is a subtle melancholy behind the funk. “3:00AM Funk” isn’t just a jam for night owls. This is a meditation on disconnection, longing and the fleeting beauty of genuine moments.

In a city full of people, the song explores the quiet ache of not quite belonging even when surrounded by noise and motion. And yet it never gives in to despair. Instead, it leans into those brief, shimmering moments of truth — the kind that feel more like visions than memories when daylight hits.

With its lush sonic textures and lyrical depth, “3:00AM Funk” has both a vibe and a reflection. This is a track for the thinkers, the wanderers and anyone who knows that some of the most honest feelings show up when the world is asleep.

MASSEY is continuing to create music that grooves on the surface but lingers in the soul.

About MASSEY

MASSEY is more than just a musical project. Birthed not in a boardroom or a garage, but in a moment of creative awakening by producer JoeBaby Michaels, MASSEY seemed to arrive fully formed with a voice, vision and a swagger all his own.

Led by a frontman who doesn’t play traditional instruments but vocalizes entire arrangements à la James Brown, MASSEY is a bold experiment in sound collaboration.

Drawing deeply from the funk and soul traditions of New Orleans, and blending in the grit of rock and the swagger of retro R&B, MASSEY’s music is both cinematic and full-bodied. Each track is built from the ground up through voice — not just in lyrics, but in whistled basslines, hummed horn parts and scatted hooks.

These raw audio sketches are brought to life by a crack team of collaborators, most notably longtime writing partner and guitarist Peter Oravetz. Together they have created a sound that is as raw as it is refined, drenched in personality and pulsing with electricity.

And just a handful of singles out, MASSEY has already drawn attention surpassing 100,000 combined views on the first two video releases and winning over fans with a blend of sultry grooves and poetic flair.

Behind the music lies a deeper mission – to connect, to inspire and to use the language of funk and feeling to speak on everything from personal longing to collective change. With his debut album titled “Reason For Being” slated for release this summer, and first live performances lined up at NOLA JazzFest, MASSEY is poised to turn up the volume on a bold new chapter of artistic expression.

Now is the time of MASSEY!
