Interview with ¡TILT! – unbalanced

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman August 7, 2016 7:57 am Tagged With: Europe, Germany, hard rock, Rock

TILT

¡TILT!’s album “unbalanced” is an album full of influences and Til’s musical development. With the project ¡TILT!, he was able to make his own record because that was his dream.

At the age of 17 he wrote and arranged 10 pieces of rock music at its best. But it was impossible for him to record “unbalanced” on his own so he picked the best musicians out of his environment to record his ideas.

Finally 11 musicians ended up playing and singing on “unbalanced“. Because of all these musicians it is a very varied record.

In this interview, we discuss ¡TILT!’s influences, their newest project, and more. Full Q&A as well as links and the video for their single “Mr. White” can be found below.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?

Well I always was a “rocker” and listened to Van Halen, KISS, Hendrix, Black Sabbath etc.But then my parents took me to my second concert and this was the guitarist Stevie Salas (first one was KISS). And since then I fell in love with this funky grungy alternative music Stevie played. I wanted to have more music like this so I found Nuno Bettencourt with Extreme, Audioslave, RATM and all this funky stuff. So this very got me into this genre or style.

How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?

Until today I just released one record called unbalanced with my band ¡TILT! in 2015 so I’m sharing my music for about a year. But I was creating my music since 2 or 3 years. I always wanted to release a record with my own music that’s why I started early to write songs.

Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?

My biggest influences are Stevie Salas, Richie Kotzen, Eddie Van Halen and some Hendrix. My motivation is my love to music. Music makes me happy and of course I want my music to be heard by as many people as possible.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

That’s a good question. I wanted to have a varied record because I don’t like records where you listen to 6 songs and then start to think “Didn’t I listen to this song 10 minutes ago?”. I wanted to excite the listener and I hope I accomplished this.

What was the last song you listened to?

Soundgarden – Fell On Black Days

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

I prefer CDs. The sound quality is just so much better than mp3s (even the high-quality mp3s) and I like it to have something in my hand with a booklet … But I must admit that I have a SD card playing in my car because it’s hard to handle 20 CDs in your car haha. I do have some old vinyls from my parents but my record player is broken.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

No I don’t stream music. But I think Spotify or Apple Music are great ways for a artist to get heard and to get discovered so I put my music there too. But for myself I prefer to have a CD playing.

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?

First: Make them think, “Wow this band is really rocking! I need this!” Second: Turn them into fans.

Do you gig, tour or perform? Do you ever live stream? Where can music lovers see you live?

Yes but currently just in Germany. We are at the beginning and need to play some gigs in Germany to get more famous there. My dream is to tour the whole world so hopefully everybody gets the chance to see us live but for now it’s unfortunately just Germany.

I never thought about live streaming but that’s a good idea! I recently discovered the live function on Facebook, this could be a great way to stream our concert live to our fans.

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?

The best place to connect should be Facebook. We update everything on Facebook but you can also have a look on our website which we update too. But we don’t have twitter. We are recording our second record right now so it would be great for you stay tuned! You can discover my music everywhere: iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify, Apple Music.

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

We would be so happy if anyone reads this interview and checks us out. We hope you like our music and you’ll become a fan.

As the collective attention span shrinks, Eddie Canyon finds himself searching for meaning within the noise. Reaching into and around his Arkansas roots, Eddie carves a distinctively southern Hip Hop undercurrent in his exploratory approach to music. Weaving tales of battling addiction, thoughts on spirituality, and irreverent social commentary into his lyrics, Eddie aims to intrigue his audience at the least, and at most, leave them with a liberating degree of thoughtfulness.
