With his debut album Reason For Being, MASSEY doesn’t just make an entrance. He makes a statement. This is a record that moves between celebration and reflection, body and spirit, groove and grace. And it’s the sound of an artist who has lived enough life to know what really matters, and who’s finally ready to say it out loud.
The opening track, “Veil Is Lifted,” sets the tone with a shimmering guitars and vocals. There is a sense of MASSEY not only performing here, but chasing the truth through rhythm and melody until it breaks wide open.
That blend of spiritual energy and sheer fun runs throughout. “(Never) 2 Hot!” (featuring XOCHI) spins a climate change message into a feel good disco-funk anthem, proof that you can dance your way toward awareness.
His cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Box of Rain” featuring Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon, is another surprise, reimagined as a swampy and gospel tinged soul jam that somehow feels both reverent and brand new.
Elsewhere, “Tattoo My Heart” bursts with New Orleans swagger, and “BOOKIN’” is pure adrenaline with its tight horns, big groove and vocals from MASSEY that sounds like a man having the time of his life.
Recorded at Louisiana’s legendary Dockside Studio, where everyone from B.B. King to Dr. John once left their mark, Reason For Being carries that same live wire warmth. The band, including bassist Charlie Wooton, guitarist Daniel Groover and drummer Doug Belote play with easy confidence, keeping the sound earthy but electric. Producer JoeBaby Michaels (The Rolling Stones, James Brown) keeps the edges intact, letting the funk breathe and the spirit shine through.
MASSEY himself is a natural born frontman. With his silver pompadour, shades, big grin and a message that is all heart. He is preaching wisdom, justice and kindness but he is doing it through a groove you just can’t shake.
The thing about Reason For Being is that it is not trying to reinvent the wheel. It’s reminding us why it turns in the first place. It’s a record full of life, grit, and joy, the kind that makes you want to crank it up and remember why you fell in love with music.
About MASSEY
MASSEY isn’t your typical frontman. He doesn’t pick up a guitar or sit behind a piano. Instead, he sings entire arrangements into existence. Like a James Brown revivalist with a modern twist, he vocalizes basslines, horn stabs, and rhythmic grooves, turning raw inspiration into fully formed songs through sheer creative instinct.
Discovered and developed by producer JoeBaby Michaels (Rolling Stones, James Brown, Lynyrd Skynyrd), MASSEY emerged as a fully realized artistic force with his part preacher, part showman and all soul personality. Working closely with longtime collaborator and guitarist Peter Oravetz, MASSEY channels the pulse of New Orleans funk, the grit of Southern rock and the swagger of classic R&B into a sound that is unmistakably his own.
Each release adds another layer to the MASSEY universe. From the climate anthem “(Never) 2 Hot” to the darkly seductive “Tattoo My Heart,” the adrenaline fueled “BOOKIN’,” and the soulful resurrection anthem “Comeback Morning.”
Now, with his debut album Reason for Being MASSEY stands at the edge of a thrilling new chapter. One defined by creativity, conviction and a belief in the power of funk and feeling to move the world.
