AloneKitty Pushes Shoegaze to the Edge with “Gotta Let It Go”

by Leslie Sherman April 4, 2025 1:03 pm Tagged With: singer, songwriter

Toronto-based shoegaze outfit AloneKitty, the brainchild of Michelle K, returns with “Gotta Let It Go”—a cathartic, noise-drenched anthem that captures the raw emotion of severing ties. A swirling storm of cascading guitar textures, unorthodox tunings, and relentless intensity, the track embodies the moment when frustration turns into finality, when holding on is no longer an option. It’s a sonic gut-punch—one that resonates deeply, whether you’re experiencing heartbreak, personal upheaval, or the simple act of choosing yourself over chaos.

From the opening chords, “Gotta Let It Go” pulls listeners into a haze of distortion, its soundscape shifting between tension and release. Written in a Thurston Moore-style tuning, the track pulses with the restless energy of classic Sonic Youth while channeling the hypnotic, immersive textures of My Bloody Valentine. The guitars lurch and dive like waves crashing in slow motion, layering fuzz and feedback into a wall of sound that swallows everything in its path. Jonathan Knowles’ bass lines add a steady undercurrent, while Stefan Loebus’ pounding drums drive the song’s urgency. It’s a composition that feels both visceral and dreamlike—a collision of noise and melody where emotion bleeds into every reverberating note.

Lyrically, “Gotta Let It Go” is a reckoning. The song confronts the painful but necessary decision to walk away, transforming anger and sadness into something tangible. The lyrics, delivered with a mix of detachment and raw intensity, mirror the emotional push-and-pull of toxic relationships—the moments when love and resentment intertwine before snapping apart. The chorus surges with an almost hypnotic repetition, a mantra of release that gains power with every cycle, driving home the track’s central theme: sometimes, the only way forward is through the wreckage.

The single follows AloneKitty’s debut album, a record that introduced their signature blend of ethereal melodies and crushing distortion. Praised by Rebel Noise for its “powerful, distortion-heavy” sound, the project has steadily built a name in the modern shoegaze landscape while paying homage to the genre’s pioneers. AloneKitty thrives in that liminal space between beauty and chaos, crafting songs that are both sonically overwhelming and emotionally cathartic. Whether live or in the studio, the band translates the weight of human emotion into soundscapes that feel almost cinematic in their depth and intensity.

Now signed to Mint 400 Records, AloneKitty is poised for its next evolution. “Gotta Let It Go” is a glimpse into what’s to come—an unfiltered, emotionally charged wave of sound that refuses to be ignored. With more music already in the works, the band continues to push the boundaries of shoegaze, proving that noise can be just as powerful as words when it comes to telling a story.
