Bud E. Luv Revitalizes the Classic “Music to Watch Girls By” with Modern Elegance

by Leslie Sherman October 11, 2024 10:42 am Tagged With: 2024, Jazz, music video, singer, songwriter, United States

Bobby Vickers, under his alter ego Bud E. Luv, breathes new life into the classic song “Music to Watch Girls By” with a captivating re-interpretation that feels both timeless and strikingly modern.

Known for his ability to re-imagine old standards, Bud E. Luv transforms the song from a light-hearted, somewhat dated piece into a sophisticated reflection on beauty and human connection.

In this rendition, Luv’s voice is smooth yet layered with emotion, stripping away any of the kitschy charm that some earlier versions may have leaned into, like Andy Williams’ well-known but polished take.

Instead, Luv delivers a performance filled with nuance and sensitivity, offering a deeper, more thoughtful exploration of the song’s theme. His phrasing and delivery make it clear that this isn’t just about the visual—it’s about honoring and appreciating people in all their forms.

The accompanying black-and-white video, directed by Tom Donald of hiTrecords, further enhances this rendition.

Set in the intimate and dimly lit Mr. Tipple’s Jazz Club, the minimal backdrop puts Luv’s performance center stage.

With just one audience member, Ilana Niernberger who mysteriously disappears by the video’s end, the visuals add a layer of intrigue and subtle melancholy. Donald’s direction smartly refocuses the song’s message, shifting from the objectification of beauty to a meditation on respect and connection.

“The world is there and meant to be recognized, valued, and respected,” Donald says.

“Mr Luv understands the essential dynamic between people; he’s lived long enough and seen enough of the world to know that it’s not about degrading the visage, but instead honoring and celebrating it in all its forms.”

Created over 35 years ago, Bud E. Luv embodies a retro-cool, Vegas-style lounge singer who embraces the glitz and glamor of mid-century American entertainment often with a humorous and self-aware twist. He has become a fixture in San Francisco’s vibrant music scene, regularly performing at legendary venues like Bimbo’s, The Fillmore, and Paradise Lounge.

As Bud E. Luv, Vickers has made a career of reinventing classic tunes, mixing jazz, swing, pop, and other genres, while maintaining a sense of nostalgia. His performances are marked by charm, wit, and a dedication to the art of entertainment, often reflecting the golden era of crooners and big-band music. Luv’s alter ego allows Vickers to explore various musical styles and showcase his versatility as an entertainer, all while appealing to a wide range of audiences

His version of “Music to Watch Girls By” is not just a nostaglic throwback; it’s a fresh take that speaks to contemporary sensibilities while staying true to the spirit of the original.

It’s a must-listen for fans of the Great American Songbook and for those curious to see how a classic can be masterfully reinterpreted.
