Chromatic Warfare by Noel Black and XRA

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman June 23, 2013 9:33 am Tagged With: dance, Electronic, Hip Hop, Rock

Chromatic Warfare by XRA and Noel Black Noel Black and XRA have joined forces to create something refreshing, genre-bending, and highly intelligent.

Chromatic Warfare is a combination of musical styles and elements that come together to form a power-packed, get-off-your-ass-and-move while thinking-deeply-about-your-existence soundtrack.

Noel Black and XRA both have solo careers but this project is the natural evolution of their crafts.

Mr. Black is from Tobago and was introduced to Reggae and Calypso at an early age. When he moved to New York, he learned about hip hop, rock, and metal.

XRA grew up in the Bay Area where she studied classical music while playing piano, singing in choruses alongside symphony orchestras, and then moving on to study formal dance in college.

“Before I met Noel, my stuff was more (hip hop)-soul-jazz,” XRA says. “Hanging out with him rubbed off on me and I found myself exploring rock. He helped me enhance my music.”

Meeting in a coffee shop, the two seamlessly came together with their respective talents to compliment each in a way that forms a powerhouse of artistic talent.

Chromatic Warfare is the first release on Noel’s new project, Noel Black Music, LLC.

“’Chromatic’ references color and music beyond white and black,” Noel Black explains. “It references the discussions we don’t have as human beings. Like, ‘I’m black and you’re white, but we have the same fears.’ It also references not pigeonholing music—a great piece of work is a great piece of work.”

The 3 tracks that make up Chromatic Warfare move fast, pack a punch, and leave you hitting repeat in order to make sure you catch the lyrics.

It’s not often you hear music that makes you get up and move while, at the same time, causing your mind to digest and think about a message.
