Debo Ray’s Self Titled Debut Is Bold, Brilliant and Unapologetically Her

by Leslie Sherman July 14, 2025 10:57 am Tagged With: singer, songwriter, United States

Singer songwriter Debo Ray has not just make a record — she has made a statement. Her self-titled debut album is fierce, fearless and deeply personal, and it’s the kind of debut that doesn’t ask for permission or genre labels.

It just shows up, honest and full of life, very much like the artist herself.

Listen here:

If you’ve only heard Debo as a featured voice, whether on Grammy nominated jazz albums or collaborative projects, then this is the moment where she truly steps into her own. And Debo does it with style, swagger, and soul.

Right out of the gate, “Tell Me What You Want” , with it’s slick and punchy tone, mixing R&B hooks with a touch of hip-hop edge, and already you know you’re in for something different.

Debo’s voice is magnetic. It’s not just technically brilliant, but also emotionally present as if she is in the room singing with you.

“Gaslight” digs a little deeper. This is a slow burn of a song that builds tension throughout. Debo tells a story that a lot of people will recognize. It’s about emotional manipulation, control and finally waking up to your own worth. There’s anger in it, but also clarity and Debo’s vocals are so precise and full of intention that you can feel it in your chest.

But the album isn’t all pain and catharsis. “Feelin’ Lucky” is light on its feet — warm, playful, full of joy. This is more the sound of someone who is remembering that life can be good and even sweet sometimes. This balance is part of what makes the album work so well – it knows when to push and when to breathe.

The standout track, though, is “Take That.” This is where everything – Debo’s voice, her story, her purpose all comes into full focus.

It’s not loud or flashy, but it hits deep. “Take That” is about reclaiming your power, facing your childhood wounds and saying, with grace and strength: This doesn’t define me anymore.

Knowing Debo’s background, growing up in a traditional Haitian household and surrounded by music but also tough emotional terrain, the song lands with weight. It is one of these rare pieces that is both incredibly specific and also relatable to so many of us.

What’s striking about the whole album is how free it feels. Debo pulls from pop, jazz, soul, R&B and even a little bit of soul, not to show off per se but because that’s who she is. The records sounds much like a life lived – complicated, joyful, bruised, defiant and beautiful.

About Debo Ray

Debo Ray is a vocalist, songwriter and performer whose voice has graced Grammy-nominated albums and international stages — but Debo Ray, her self-titled debut album, is her most personal work yet.

Born and raised in a Haitian-American household outside Boston, Debo was immersed in music right from the start, singing in church and learning classical voice before studying at the Berklee College of Music.

She has worked alongside legends like Bobby McFerrin and Esperanza Spalding, but this new chapter finds her telling her own story. Whether she is blending soul, jazz, rock or pop, what sets Debo apart is her emotional clarity and magnetic stage presence.

With Debo Ray, she has created an album that is as musically adventurous as it is resonant to her audiences. Not, she is ready to take center stage.
