Discover George Collins’ Captivating New Single “Scarred for Life.”

by Leslie Sherman March 11, 2024 7:06 am Tagged With: indie, newmusic, singer, songwriter, Soul

George Collins’ latest single, “Scarred for Life,” is a song all about resilience and optimism in the face of life’s ups and downs.

Taking inspiration from music icons like Otis Redding and Leon Bridges, Collins effortlessly blends the timeless essence of classic soul with a contemporary twist.

Despite its initial sombre connotations, the title “Scarred for Life” serves as a metaphor for overcoming personal struggles and emerging stronger for it. With its classic soul / R&B style set in 6/8 time, the track exudes both nostalgia and modernity.

The creative process for this song was spontaneous, with melodies and lyrics flowing naturally as Collins wandered the streets of his hometown Prague. This organic approach imbues the song with an authentic, soulful quality.

The title “Scarred for Life” had been kicking around in my head for some time, but the idea was to change the meaning from a permanent physical scar to mental wounds based on hard personal experience that can be transformed into something positive to enable one to embrace life and live it more fully – that’s the sense of being scarred for life.

So, despite the apparent (depressing) meaning of the title, it is actually a song with an uplifting and hopeful message about resilience and perseverance. And I knew this was going to be a classic Soul/R&B tune in 6/8 time – my homage to the classic Soul and R&B music I’d loved as a boy.

One day last summer, I dropped off my younger daughter at her art camp and started walking home – I do a lot of walking around Prague, and that’s when I get many of my ideas.

It was a fine, sunny day, and as I walked I started tapping out a slow 6/8 rhythm, then suddenly the melody started to come, and then the lyrics.  Fortunately, I had my SONY handheld device with me (as I always do), so every block or so I would stop to hum or sing a line right there on the sidewalk.

The song showcases Collins’ storytelling skills and infectious melodies, setting the stage for his forthcoming album “Songs for Grown-Ups.”

George Collins’ began playing music in childhood, nurtured by familial influences and a passion for songwriting. His involvement in the vibrant music scene of Charlottesville, VA and collaborations with esteemed musicians like Carter Beauford and LeRoi Moore laid the groundwork for his music career.

Collins’ affinity for The Dave Matthews Band adds a nostalgic touch, recalling fond memories of camaraderie shared with the band members backstage.

Beyond music, Collins is also a versatile artist, and explores creative avenues including writing novels, screenplays, and poetry, demonstrating his exceptional talent.

George Collins’ new album “Songs for Grown-ups” is set to be released soon so stay tuned.
