Emma Brooke is Right on Time with “Wishing He Was You”

by C Bret Campbell July 22, 2013 7:24 pm

emmaRecently released single “Wishing He Was You” by Emma Brooke (Zuketunes) was on my platter today. It’s a pretty little love song set to a cute (I don’t use it often, and this is a really good “cute”) video, that actually sounds good streaming. I was thinking this while digging for cable to get it out through the monitors after a couple spins through the cans. Ah! There’s the one! I knew it was in here somewhere, now let’s get into this thing…

Sometimes it takes a minute for things to gel and hit home, and Emma’s song, which I had heard once in a hangout on air, did that with me today.

As I rummaged for the elusive cable, I let this one play and got into the tune, and distracted myself with the video… not good when looking for something. The story kept grabbing me and a particular line really had my attention. Now that I was settled nicely between the monitors and had everything all leveled out, I started cranking it on up… just couldn’t avoid it.

It starts of with a sweet bit of country-ish mandolin and some acoustic guitar and a simply produced vocal and by the end of the first verse you’re thinking, “What a cool way to tell a story, she’s got here!”  I’m not gonna spoil it for you, but get ready for a twist in the way Emma deals with a subject that has puzzled people for millenia (literally).  Have a listen, and see for yourself.

If you can’t tell, I’m kinda doing this one in “real time.” My wife just came in, so I asked her to listen. She also gives it a two thumbs up and says, “it’s catchy, she’s got a good voice and with the video, it’s really neat!”

I really have to hand it to Emma, and the whole crew on this one. The whole package is just very well done. Starting from a well written song, working in a really cool production and wrapping it up with a unique video (oh it has a surprise, too). Guys I love a mandolin, and putting an 808 snare in with it was just awesome, but then deciding to eschew any hint of autotuning? Wow! Let’s break some barriers, eh?

Well done, Emma. I’ll let you figure out the line that really moved me, today. I’m willing to wager that your next one will be right on time, too!

The song was produced by Lee Nadel & Rich Mercurio
Background vocals by Tabitha Fair
Guitar and Mandolin by Marc Ribler
Video created and directed by Thomas Zukowski
