Kat Lee Rivers’s new single “American Heartbreak” (Acoustic Version) arrives like a quiet prayer at a time when so much of the cultural conversation is loud and combative.
With nothing more than her renewed, soul bearing voice and Bob Lanzetti’s understated guitar work, Rivers turns a lament into an act of hope.
Listen here:
The arrangement is stripped to the bone with a no frills, no studio gloss which allows her phrasing honed over years as a jazz vocalist to glow center of frame. And Rivers sings from the heart and from the kitchen table, shifting the idea of “American Heartbreak” from political slogan to lived human experience.
The acoustic version exposes the song’s tender emotional architecture. It’s in the small details with Lanzetti’s harmonics and the pauses between Rivers’s lines, that the larger point of this song emerges. Common ground begins with listening.
The melody rises like a tide in the chorus, steady and a gentle reminder that empathy and shared values like family, freedom and the ability to dream far outlast the noise of “left vs. right”.
In its spareness, the song feels quite timeless, echoing Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell and Allison Russell while remaining unmistakably Rivers.

About Kat Lee Rivers
For listeners new to her, Kat Lee Rivers is an artist whose musical journey stretches across continents and genres. A 2014 finalist in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Competition and multiple DownBeat award recipient, she first came to prominence in the jazz world before expanding into Americana and the vibrant rhythms of Brazil.
Her debut album, Anything but Ordinary marked that evolution pairing her original songwriting with a captivating blend of Americana grit, Brazilian warmth and sophisticated jazz undertones.
Following a period of vocal recovery, Rivers’s voice has returned stronger than ever. She draws on her experiences living and performing in Spain, Texas, Los Angeles and New York City. She sings in Portuguese and has graced stages from intimate house concerts to (now-closed) New York venues like Cornelia Street Café and Rockwood Music Hall, as well as The Chapel Restoration in Cold Spring, where she’ll return in Fall 2025. Her versatility has even placed her alongside the Dallas Symphony Orchestra backing Ben Folds, as well as on European tours with Barcelona trio Árid, including a rooftop performance at La Pedrera.
Now, Rivers is working with Grammy winning guitarist and producer Bob Lanzetti (Snarky Puppy). She is creating a Spring 2026 album that deepens her “old soul” sound, one that marries her jazz sophistication to the honesty of folk and Americana.
“American Heartbreak” (Acoustic Version) is both a bridge to that upcoming project and a stand alone piece that demonstrates why her music resonates.
It’s deeply felt, beautifully sung and grounded in the belief that even in fractured times a song can offer a measure of unity.
