Interview with Gee Universe

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman August 3, 2016 6:00 am Tagged With: Hip Hop, rap

Gee Universe-Drug Love

From the city of New Orleans comes Gee Universe: National Recording Artist, Songwriter, and Actor. Gee is a freelance artist and works with Sham of the Trak Starz. Sham, who is a two-time Grammy winner and 20 million record-selling producer, has encouraged Gee to make a name for himself.

Gee’s unique style and voice can be described as a mix between Chris Brown and Jason Derulo, with an electronic twist. Gee’s music is embodied with emotion and inspired by the girl of his dreams.

Gee enjoys giving back to the community, thus he uses his talents for charity events and churches as well. His most recent feature was a track called “Michael Jackson” produced by The Trak Starz with Noah Universe and Chingy

In this interview we discuss influences, surviving in a digital era, and his most recent project.

Full Q&A as well as streams available below.

What attracted you to this genre or style of music?

Well, i was always into Pop music, but when I started working with Sham of the Trak Starz, we started writing for Mainstream Pop Artists and we just kind of stuck with it

How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?

i have been creating music and sharing it all my life literally, since the age of 5, i have been performing and trained to be a Artist

Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?

My Brother Shelly Rell Influences me, he is the reason why i am so diverse with music. He made sure i wrote the best music and studied the greats before me. What keeps me going is knowing that my music touches people, that its refreshing and flavorful and i enjoy being creative.

Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?

yes i was just trying to be creative, promote real love, combine rnb and pop at the same time. I guess you can say i love experimenting with emotions and music

Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?

The Challenges i face are just mental ones, such as making sure the records are good enough, i out so much pressure on myself to make amazing products. Where im from so many Artists are sounding like each other, making the same music over and over, or because im from where im from my music must be horrible as well, so getting people to hear my music is hard because there’s a perception that is there before they actually hear the music, But it only makes me better and want to do better.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Honestly they all are very important to an Artist, i really like one you didn’t name which is Tidal that gives the Artists control. But if i had to pick it would be Apple music, why because its the most sought-after for consumers.

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

I prefer Vinyl but i live in a world where i have to use Mp3s daily

What was the last song you listened to?

The Last song i listened to is This must be the place by the Talking Heads

Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more of your music?

The best place to connect with me is instagram @geeuniverse, my Twitter @geeuniverse and my Soundcloud @geeuniverse

Do you gig, tour or perform? Do you ever live stream? Where can music lovers see you perform?

I do Perform and Tour, I’ve been on Two National Tours already. Preparing for one now with my Team. Haven’t really live streamed, but we definitely will now. Music lovers can follow me on Periscope

Any last thoughts? Shout outs? Words of wisdom?

I just want to say thank you for even talking with me. As a Musician i strive to be the best i can be, i mastered the art of writing, playing instruments, just being creative. I make non detrimental music, im a Conscious artist that has an edge. I use my creative license in the best way. I want to shout out my lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving me all of this, shout out to my mom for passing me her talents, Shout out to Shamar my mentor and big brother of the 2 time grammy winning, 20 Million and growing record selling Trak Starz. Lastly my Team and Fans. We as Artists have platforms to use our voices and power, so use them the right way. Thank you!
