Higgnz Takes Us To The Bayou On His Latest Project, Brackish

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman July 24, 2018 10:08 am Tagged With: Hip Hop, Louisana, rap, United States

Higgnz-Brackish

Louisiana native Higgnz has arrived with his country-infused party rap album Brackish.

Although he has been creating music for over twenty years, Brackish is Higgnz first official solo album.

Rapping and writing rhymes began as a quiet hobby for Higgnz. One day he decided to let a friend listen to what he was working on. After a much needed boost of confidence, Higgnz realized it might be worthwhile to not hide his talent. As word spread, Higgnz soon found himself in a five-emcee crew titled Solider Pack. The crew performed any and everywhere they could grab an audience.

Higgnz discography goes back to 2001 when he released his first project with the group KawCajun. He is currently in the process of sorting through his back catalog in order to release his old recordings as new singles. His catalog includes the projects: The Hustle (2003), Mad Track All Stars Compilation (2005), Downaroad Party – Katrina’s Aftermath (2006), The New Testaments Bk. 1 – The Delivery Expert (2008), CPC – Cross Parish Connect (2009), MMIX: When Life Meets Music (2009), The New Testaments Bk. 2 – Navigating with Pirates (2010) and Sol Trybe EP (2017).

Before the new album Brackish was recorded, Higgnz found himself at rock bottom. After years of chasing the music business side of the music dream, he found himself beat down, exhausted, and still without one of those coveted label deals so many strive for. Also burning out from the street life, Higgnz found himself at a crossroads; change things up and provide for his wife, children and family or fade to black.

When I walked away in 2011, I was at rock bottom. I had basically lost everything because of the all out sacrifice of myself and my family for that record deal musicians desperately chase. Not only was the music slipping away but so was my personal life. Drugs and the street lifestyle had taken over me. I had to get my life straight for my wife and children before they ended up without a stable roof and a father. I spent a large portion of those hiatus years in what many people would call the, “Boon Docks.” I was able to clear my head and do a lot of soul searching. What I realized is that most of Hip Hop is embedded in about 10% of the artists environment. Usually the negative side of life. I wanted to take a different approach for this album and do something entirely different”

Taking his album title from the type of water surrounding Southeast Louisiana, Brackish also serves as a representation of Higgnz taste, diversity and complexity as a human. It also represents his growth as a person as well as an artist. Although referred to as a party album, Brackish is a positive, uplifting, motivational tool as opposed to the stereotypical, tear-up-da-club in an alcohol/drug-induced trance type of record.

Hitting us with country-rock-infused production and a very organic, live-band feel, Brackish hits hard from beginning to end. Each track uplifts, energizes and motivates the listener. Higgnz confident, aggressive flows are powered by his emotionally fueled lyrics which hit us with a healthy dose of substance we can easily relate to on multiple levels.

Production on this album comes courtesy of Sinima, Jee-Juh, Allrounda, Like-O and Darel Poche. The only other emcee featured is PJ Mac who Higgnz refers to as his partner in crime in their entertainment industry journey. Producer Darel Poche is from Higgnz’ hometown.
