Interview with Beckwith JP

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman November 6, 2017 9:28 am Tagged With: Acoustic, singer, songwriter, United Kingdom

Beckwith JP

In this interview spotlight, we chat with singer/songwriter Beckwith JP about influences, challenges, the latest project and more.

Full Q&A along with links and streams below.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

I didn’t like the direction, new sound and lack of substance in the R&B market. I had to make a move and the singer/songwriter acoustic genre fit me perfectly. You can be honest and truthful with your songs. The musicianship is incredibly strong to, however, never say never. I might one day return to the R&B scene….

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

Its different thematically to my last release, this one is more friendship based whereas the first EP of this series was a little dark lyrically. It concerned my own limitations and frustrations with the Music Industry and divorce. This one although similar tempo is a lot lighter.

What was the last song you listened to?

Hmm, I think it was ‘I Can’t Lie’ by a Liverpool R&B group called Mic Lowry. Its very Michael Jackson. I really like the Melody and vocal. The sound is quite airy with heavy pads and some vocoder. Vocoders make every song at least 10% better!

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

Another tough question. I have a CD collection that stands 2,000 but I do like the accessibility of Mp3’s. I have embraced the digital era but…..I also like switching on my turntable, closing my eyes, putting on the headphones and listening to some old Nat King Cole. I like cassette too. For all intents and purposes if you need one answer, lets say CD.

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

You’re killing me!! I have to play this politically haha. I like them all!! Equally! Don’t forget Google Music. That is HUGE too. They are very fair with artists, especially independent ones like myself.

Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?

It is hit and miss. I can get my music to people who might not have been able to get it previously. Like in the 90s, if you have an American CD release, its doubtful you could get it in the UK whereas now all distribution companies release Worldwide. The only thing that stings is the renumeration. For example 500,000 streams is the equivalent of 500 albums sold. In the 90s 500,000 independent CD’s sold you would be very well paid.

Where can we connect with you online and discover more music?

I am mostly available on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. My handle on everything is @beckwithjp. I am always accessible so come through and say hi!

Anything else before we sign off?

Just that my new EP called II is available on iTunes, Amazon, Tidal, Spotify and Google Music. It features my new single ‘I Won’t Let You Down’ and I am very proud of it.
