Interview with Bugsy – FUCKBOY

by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman May 14, 2019 4:34 pm Tagged With: Hip Hop, New York City, rap, United States

Bugsy-Fuckboy

Immerse yourself in Bugsy’s world with the release of the “Fuckboy” music video, which premiered exclusively at Hercampus . The embodiment of allyship within the feminist community, Bugsy encourages you to take down the patriarchy with her in this new 360 VR experience. “Fuckboy” incorporates beautifully blended harmonies with killer guitar slaps all laid over a catchy war cry of a chorus.

The video was directed by longtime videographer and producer Nir Netzer, who is also the of the head of content and director at Making360, service and platform that creates an immersive experience for brands to interact with their customers. This past year, Nir participated in the Oculus Launchpad 2018, directed three 360 experiences for DreamworksTV, and a 360 investigative video for Oxygen Network.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Bugsy about the new release, technology, challenges and more.

Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

My name is Bugsy The Boss Woman, and I create female rap music.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?

My parents were both musicians, and it’s always been a part of who I am. I grew up singing classical, jazz, opera…I even did one year of conservatory as an opera major! I moved out to LA one year after, and the rest is history. I’ve always been passionate about female empowerment. Seeing the areas of our society that still feel off balance for women’s rights is a huge motivator for me to keep fighting the good fight. I want to help push our power along and have found that usually through music, I do it best.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?

The “Fuckboy” single release is like no release I’ve ever done before; mostly because it’s in Virtual Reality, but also in the sense that it’s the biggest project/campaign I’ve ever done. I’m really going for this one. The goal for both the song and the video is to give women the opportunity to express their legitimate anger over any fuckboy that’s ever messed with them. And most importantly, to come out, feeling empowered.

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?

I’d say one of the biggest challenges of being an indie artist is that I can’t just be the artist- I have to be my own A&R rep, manager, producer, writer, choreographer, anything else you can think of! The best thing I’ve ever done is gradually build a team around me that believes in my vision, and I believe in theirs. Digital marketing in music is something that definitely scared me at first. I would hear old music industry cronies complaining that the whole infrastructure of the music industry was collapsing and that it was even harder for the new generation to break out because of the level of over saturation in the marketplace. But I have always believed that the times change for a reason, and I never doubted that there would be ways of utilizing the new system to my advantage. My favorite aspect of the new world is that artists can now create their own platform and embrace their independence! It’s a beautiful opportunity to be the CEO of my own company, rely less on the labels, and gain fans directly through social media; therefore gaining power in the negotiating room. It has made me work harder than I ever thought I would, and I’m honestly really grateful for it.

What was the last song you listened to?

The last song I listened to was “Burn Slow” by Jaira Burns 😉

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?

MP3’s

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?

Spotify!
